Red cricket ball lies on cricket pitch

We preview match two of the Momentum One Day Cup which sees the Hollywoodbets Doplhins go up against the WSB Cape Cobras at Kingsmead.

The second match of the 2017/18 Momentum One Day Cup will see the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and the WSB Cape Cobras go head to head at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Thursday.

Both sides come into this match with momentum after excellent showings in the Ram Slam T20 Challenge. So then, who will come out on top in the “Battle of the Bookies”? Let’s take a look:

Hollywoodbets Dolphins
The Hollywoodbets Dolphins haven’t had much time to put their disappointing Ram Slam T20 Challenge final performance behind them against a gun Titans outfit. Despite that defeat, Grant Morgan’s men will take a lot confidence into the List A competition from their endeavours in the shortest format.

At the time of writing the Dolphins hadn’t released their match-squad, but we have a pretty good idea of who will be in that side. What we do know for sure is that Keshav Maharaj and Andile Phelukwayo won’t be in the XI as they’re with the Protea Test side for the match against Zimbabwe.

I expect to see Robbie Frylinck, Imran Tahir and Mthokozisi Shezi retain their places in the XI. We could even see Calvin Savage brought into the side just to add a bit more bite to an attack that – for all of its collective talent – lacks pace.

The top and middle order should pretty much pick itself. Morne van Wyk, and Vaughn van Jaarsveld should open things up with the Sarel Erwee, Dane Vilas, Khaya Zondo and Sibonelo Makhanya making up the remainder of the top and middle order.

WSB Cape Cobras
Ashwell Prince is of opinion that his WSB Cape Cobras side contains the right mix of top and middle order power, bowling fineness and reserve strength to go all the way in the domestic 50 over competition… and you wouldn’t disagree either.

You can bet – at the very least – that they will improve on last season’s disastrous One Day Cup performance which saw them finish rock bottom of the standings with just three wins from 10 games.

Running through their squad, the Cobras haven’t really been affected too adversely by the warm-up game against Zimbabwe. Only Temba Bavuma and Vernon Philander were called up for that encounter while Hashim Amla is unavailable with the Boxing Day Test around the corner.

That leaves plenty of internationally capped players to have a go on Thursday. JP Duminy will skipper the side which will include the considerable talent of Richard Levi, Dane Piedt and Dane Paterson. Levi especially will be feeling the pressure after a disappointing performance in the Ram Slam T20.

Fortunately for the Cape franchise, Paterson, Kleinveldt and Duminy were magnificent in the T20 competition so they come into the MODC with a bit of form behind them. It’ll also be worth keeping an eye on Mthiwekhaya Nabe and George Linde who also shone in the T20 competition.

Verdict: Hollywoodbets Dolphins 93/100
It’s a difficult one to call this but I reckon that the Hollywoodbets Dolphins just shade it. They’ll feel confident at home where they convincingly won their only completed match in a rain-affected Ram Slam campaign and are tipped claim the points on Thursday.
