To Win Match
Durban Super Giants 67/100 | Tie 25/1 | Sunrisers 5/4
The Sunrisers are the defending SA20 Champions, and they have a good record against their Durban ‘neighbours’. Prior to the weekend, they have won their last three games against DSG.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape
While the Sunrisers have a very strong batting line-up they have struggled to post big scores this season. Their batsmen have scored runs, but they have done so in isolation rather than collectively. If SEC are to turn their season around, they need to get their combinations and partnerships working.
Marco Jansen spearheading dangerous bowling unit
SEC success in 2023 and 2024 was built around a highly consistent bowling unit. While Marco Jansen is still looking to do the business there has not been enough support from the rest if the unit. While in 2024 SEC boasted the three leading wicket takers this season none of their bowlers feature in the top ten of either wicket takers or economy rates.
Protea’s batsman David Bedingham is struggling. In three games he has played before the weekend he has had two innings and made a total of two runs. It looked like an inspired move to promote him up the order for the game against the Capitals, but the experiment didn’t work. It will be interesting to see if they give it another try. What the Sunrisers really need now is a good platform at the start of the innings that they can build around. Four for three against Pretoria was always going to be a tough position to recover from.
It’s how you finish, but also how you start
A key part of winning in T20 is about the quality of the start you get to your innings. In their three games so far, SEC have been 16 for three, 39 for two and four for three. While the 39 for two against Paarl Royals doesn’t sound too bad, by way of context Paarl made it to 132 before they lost their first (and only) wicket on a belter of a pitch.
Durban Super Giants
The Super Giants boast a fearsome batting line-up. Kane Williamson is one of the best in the world. Matthew Breetzke has an incredible SA20 record.
There is West Indian power hitter Brandon King and of course the feared proteas duo of Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen – two of the most destructive players in the world. And amongst all those stars there is Wiaan Mulder who is third on the list of best batting strike rates in the tournament. With a strike rate of 192.86, he is the highest amongst the tournament’s top ten run scorers.
De Kock showing signs of finding form
Despite the impressive nature of their batting line-up, there are no DSG players in the list of top ten run scorers. Expect that to be different by the end of the weekend. De Kock appeared to find form in his last outing and Klaasen is a due a big score.
Keshav Maharaj is an underrated skipper. He just quietly gets on with his business. Keep an eye out for him, both as a leader and a bowler. With St Georges being spin friendly Maharaj and Noor Ahmad and Prenelan Subrayen could all come into their own on Sunday.
While there are no DSG batsmen amongst the top ten scorers, they fare much better with the ball where Chris Woakes and Richard Gleeson both feature among the leading scorers.
Verdict: Sunrisers Eastern Cape
They need to negotiate Friday first, but a win in Durban will give them momentum while a loss will give them desperation. Either way, expect them to win this one at home.
