2025 SA20 – Game 25
MI Cape Town v Sunrisers Eastern Cape
Wednesday 29 January 2025 – 17:30
SuperSport Park

Traditionally Newlands has always been a venue where you batted first if you won the toss. That’s changed in recent times with the team setting having won 13 of the last 26 and the team chasing winning 13.

On Saturday Rashid Khan won the toss and fielded first – so it’s hard to know what to expect at Newlands these days

With just two home games before the playoffs, expect another full house at Newlands on Wednesday. The crowds at this season’s SA20 have been excellent and Cape Town fans are renowned for their excellent support.

MI Cape Town

Awesome batters to continue to inspire

Ryan Rickelton’s stellar form continued on Saturday as he strafed 63 from 41 balls. He has been in great shape with the bat and is loving the surface at Newlands.

Not only is he scoring bucketloads of runs, but he is also scoring them quickly. Having missed the opening games of the tournament due to injury he has played just four innings, scored 178 runs at an average of 44.5 and a strike-rate of 183.51.

Rassie van der Dussen just goes about his business quietly and effectively. He is the tournament’s third-highest scorer with 252 runs, and although he is often overshadowed by his opening partner, Rickelton, he is an incredibly reliable foil to the dashing lefthander, the duo making an excellent habit of getting MICT off to great starts.

Unified bowling attack aiding Cape side

There is not a single MICT bowler on the list of the tournament’s top wicket-takers, which suggests that they are not functioning well. That would be an incorrect assumption though as they have shared out wickets beautifully amongst themselves. George Linde and Rashid Khan have six each. Delano Potgieter and Trent Boult have five, while Kagiso Rabada has four. In short, skipper Khan is spoiled for choice for who to turn to.

MICT are very strong in almost every department, but the one area that has been found short is the number four batting spot where Colin Ingram has yet to deliver. Ingram has scored just 41 runs all tournament and was dropped for the weekend game against DSG in favour of Sediqullah Atal (who was a late addition to the side when Ben Stokes was forced to withdraw). The Afghan international didn’t do much better than Ingram as he went for just eight.

Delano Potgieter had a massive start to the tournament, and he has gone a little quiet since, but he is still there and shouldn’t be forgotten. He is averaging 7.6 with the ball and 101 with the bat – quite crazy numbers. He didn’t bat or bowl in the weekend win over DSG.

By his high standards, Dewald Brevis has had a quiet time in SA20 2025. He has scored 127 runs at an average of 25.4. What he has been, all tournament, is energetic and reliable. He has scored quick runs and played whatever role has been needed from him. He has been a finisher, he has been a bowler, he has been used to accelerate the run rate, and he has been a dynamo in the field.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape

Marco Jansen has been a standout performer for SEC this season, both with the bat and with the ball. The Sunrisers may have lost on Sunday against the Capitals, but Jansen was still there making runs – he was one of just three players who made double figures for SEC.

Zak Crawley’s SA20 2025 keeps going from bad to worse. He was dismissed first ball twice this weekend. The first time was off a no-ball, but it didn’t make much of a difference as he fell a few balls later. With 88 runs from eight innings, Crawley is averaging 11 for the reigning champions.

Bedingham proving SEC mainstay

After a slightly rocky start to the competition, Proteas’ batsman David Bedingham’s form has improved nicely. On Sunday, when the SEC batting imploded spectacularly (five batsmen made ducks and three registered scores of one), Bedingham was the mainstay scoring 48 from 40 as the wickets tumbled all around him.

Four of the best for SEC

SEC’s bowlers have been very impressive all competition, but they managed just a single wicket against the Capitals on Sunday. That said, when there is no pressure chasing a score, it’s hard for bowlers to take wickets as the batters never need to take chances. Despite their lack of success on Sunday SEC have four bowlers amongst the top seven wicket-takers in the tournament: Jansen, Richard Gleeson, Liam Dawson and Ottniel Baartman.

Along with Jansen, the primary source of runs for SEC all season has been skipper Aiden Markram. Despite a duck last time out he’s currently averaging 40.5 per innings.

Verdict: MI Cape Town

This is a tough one to call as SEC will be desperate to bounce back from their weekend loss. But that said, MICT are looking incredibly solid.

The home side have extraordinary depth and a host of players in good form. SEC are a tad on the brittle side and while some of their key players are doing well, they are not yet firing as a team on the batting front.
