Third ODI: India v Australia Preview

Limited Overs Cricket: Second ODI Preview

The India versus Australia roadshow rolls into Mahendra Singh Dhoni country this week, with the third ODI between the two nations to be played in the legend’s home town.

Australia’s Glenn Maxwell will remember the JSCA Stadium, where he hit 92 in a rained-off ODI back in 2013. He and skipper Aaron Finch are the only players from that XI in the current squad.

India v Australia | Friday, 8 March | JSCA International Stadium, Ranchi  | 10:00

To Win
India 46/100
Tie 35/1
Australia 17/10

India
Vijay Shankar came through in a pinch for India in a tight second ODI, but hasn’t quite done enough to secure a spot in the World Cup squad.

India will hope that they recover from any blips in the World Cup as well as they have done against Australia. But it would be foolish to place too much stock in their performances against a side that is, on ODI form at least, in the bottom half of the game’s elite.

Virat Kohli continues to march inexorably to every India and world batting record left standing – and one wouldn’t bet against him adding another ton to the 40 he already has in ODI cricket.

Paceman Jasprit Bumrah is probably the best ODI bowler in the world right now – and Australia have found him tougher to get away than even mystery spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

Australia
India bowled with discipline to restrict Australia to 242 all out in their chase of a target of 251, but the tourists were there own worst enemies, conspiring to put themselves under pressure.

Marcus Stoinis was Australia’s top-scorer in the second ODI, but he was also the man who gave it away at the death, when he was well set – and poised to haul the team over the line.

Australia’s bowlers again put in a great display, Pat Cummins took four for 29 to restrict India after a great start, but the team have really not batted well at all for some time.

The tourists need somebody among their ranks to put in a big performance, to get them back into this series – and restore belief in the ODI squad.

Verdict: India 46/100
India are in the habit of winning – and Australia and in the habit of losing.
