Cape Town City Advance to the MTN8 Final

Semifinals results After a thrill-packed semifinal against Bidvest Wits, Cape Town City have set up a scintillating MTN8 final showdown with SuperSport United.

Cape Town City had a 1-0 lead from the first leg of the MTN8 semifinal against Bidvest Wits and they managed to record another victory, this time away from home. When Wits scored first to restore parity on Sunday afternoon everyone expected their homeground advantage to get the better of the visitors but Benni McCarthy’s charges turned the encounter on its head. Here’s a detailed report.

Wits came into the match trailing 1-0 and they needed to get on the scoresheet to keep their hopes of advancing to the final alive and they did just that when Robyn Johannes inadvertently turned the ball into his own net in the 12th minute while trying to clear Thulani Hlatshwayo’s effort.

With the encounter all square at 1-1, only a penalty shootout could have separated the two sides if the score remained the same. It wasn’t long before the visitors got their noses in front again, benefiting from the game’s second own goal as Gamal Amr headed into his own net. That meant Wits needed an insurmountable two more goals to go through to the final.

The result was put beyond doubt in the 73rd minute when Lehlohonolo Majoro turned beautifully, shrugging the defender off to make it 2-1 on the day and 3-1 on aggregate to the Cape Town outfit. Cape Town City will go toe to toe with SuperSport United in the MTN8 final, a team under the tutelage of their former coach Eric Tinkler.
