Challenge Cup: Clermont v Harlequins Preview

rugby players engage into a scrum

French giants Clermont will take on English side Harlequins on Saturday the 20th April. The winner of this fixture will book themselves a spot in the European Challenge Cup Final.

Clermont will be looking to make it eight wins from eight starts in the Champions Cup when they take on a Harlequins side that has been struggling for results on the domestic front. The French outfit have been an absolute handful at home this term and things could get messy for ‘Quins if the hosts are at their best this Saturday.

Clermont v Harlequins
Saturday 20 April

Parc des Sports Marcel-Michelin
21:00

To Win (80 Mins)
Clermont 1/10
Draw 30/1
Harlequins 5/1

Clermont
They came into this tournament as favourites and Clermont have truly lived up to their billing as they are the only side in the competition to have won all of their fixtures. A flawless pool phase was followed up by an emphatic quarter-final performance that saw them beat the Northampton Saints 61-38.

While the French giants have been all-conquering in the Challenge Cup this term, their domestic form has faltered somewhat over the past fortnight as they registered a 27-27 draw with Racing Metro and went down 47-44 to Toulouse last weekend.

Harlequins
Like their opponents, ‘Quins also topped their pool. They only managed to win four of their six games though, which saw them handed an away quarter-final tie with fellow English club, the Worcester Warriors. In a classic English derby, the ‘Quins manage to see off Harlequins 16-18 and book this daunting semi-final date in France.

While Clermont have been struggling for domestic results over the past fortnight, the Harlequins have endured a horrific four weeks losing their last four fixtures, with their most recent defeat being last weekend’s 19-20 loss to Northampton.

Verdict: Clermont 1/10
Yes, there’s not much value here but I simply cannot see Clermont faltering on home soil. If you’re offered a 9/10 handicap option anywhere below the 18 point mark I suggest jumping on it.
