The headline fixture of Round 5 of the 2018 Currie Cup will see the Lions and Western Province face-off on Saturday the 15th of August.
The Golden Lions will be looking to maintain their unbeaten streak in this year’s Currie Cup when they welcome Western province to Johannesburg this Saturday. The visitors are also yet to taste defeat this season but will be hard tasked to maintain that record as they are taking on a very strong Lions outfit.
Golden Lions v Western Province
Saturday 15 August

To Win (80 Mins)
Lions 7/10
Draw 20/1
Western Province 11/10
Golden Lions
The Lions were in the points again this past weekend as they beat the Cheetahs XV 47-14. Key to their bonus point win over the Free Staters was fly-half Shaun Reynolds, who really stepped up to the mark with a magnificent attacking display.
Western Province will provide a much-sterner challenge then the Cheetahs and the Lions forwards will need to produce the goods at setpiece time as their visitors have a solid pack. The Lions will also need to be wary of the Province back three, who are very good on the counter.
Western Province
The men from the Western Cape will be slightly miffed about having to endure a bye week last weekend as they were starting to build some nice momentum with bonus-point victories over the Cheetahs and Pumas saw them claim the maximum points from their first two outings.
Saturday’s fixture will be a real acid test for this young Western Province side who have faced relative cannon-fodder thus far. The Lions backs are far more classy than the Cheetahs young guns or Pumas veterans, and will really test this seemingly impressive Western Province defensive line.
Verdict: Lions 7/10
It’s a very narrow handicap and that’s why I will be backing the Lions to clear it at home. The hosts tend to close games with a flurry of late tries, and I can see that happening again here.
