This weekend’s solitary Currie Cup fixture will see Western Province and the Sharks XV square off at DHL Newlands.
The second-place Sharks XV face a real acid test this weekend as they travel down to the coast to take on arch-rivals, Western Province. The hosts for Saturday’s encounter have been in great touch with their running gameplan reaping great dividends.
Western Province v Sharks XV

To Win (80 Mins)
Western Province 5/4
Draw 25/1
Sharks XV 9/8
Western Province
The men from the ‘Mother City’ have been nothing short of sensational during the opening four games of their title defence, winning all four games with a bonus point. Their free-flowing brand of rugby has been an absolute joy to watch and will have made ‘Overs’ points punters exceedingly happy.
There will be a few worries for head coach John Dobson after last week’s 38-12 victory over the Griquas. His charges failed to kick on during the second stanza only scoring one further try. Their discipline was also rather shoddy, and if they fail to address that then the Sharks will make them pay.
Sharks XV
Like their opponents for this weekend, the Sharks head into this one off the back of four successive bonus point victories. They haven’t been as spectacular as their counterparts with ball-in-hand but they have been more defensively astute.
The Natalians head into Saturday’s fixture off the back of a clinical 37-21 victory over the Lions. They were also guilty of going to ‘sleep’ during the second half though, and they will need to maintain the tempo for the entirety of this weekend’s fixture if they are to come away with a win from their trip to Cape Town.
Verdict: Western Province 5/4
The hosts really have looked a class above this year. And while the Sharks will provide stiff opposition, I can still see the Capetonians winning this one by four points or more.
