Gold Cup 2013 & Champions Cup 2013

The final feature day of the season sees a jackpot of Grade 1 races, as well as a Grade 2, with all the focus being on the R1,25 million Gold Cup. The Gold Cup is the ultimate prize for stayers, and Duncan Howell’s KNIGHT TO REMEMBER is the bookmaker’s favourite at 6/1 to top the podium. He’ll have to fight off champion stayer SEAL, who despite having a poor run in the Durban July, will be back to his best at the distance he most relishes. The Champions Cup, which follows the Gold Cup,  will see five compeitiors from this year’s Durban July, with the Justin Snaith trained RUN FOR IT topping the betting boards. He’ll be closely traced by last year’s Durban July favourite JACKSON, who bypassed the Durban July in favour of this race. The betting for the full Greyville card is available now at Hollywood will also be offering you the option of 3, 4, 5, or 6 fixed odds places for this year’s Gold Cup!

Knight To Remember

Winning Form’s Magic Tips Comments:

The Gold Cup is often a very open event and this year is no different. All runners barring the top weight come into this race under sufferance, which makes for a very intriguing contest.
SAGE THRONE is much better than his recent form suggests and is gradually dropping in the ratings. The son of Dynasty needs things to go his way but is a quality stayer and had excuses for his last three starts. He isn’t suited to soft conditions and hated wearing blinkers, which explains his penultimate showing. He was beaten just under four lengths into 7th in this race last year but wasn’t helped by a strong tailwind that day and is 1.5kgs better off this time around. More importantly, there are a few natural pacesetters and that will ensure a fast pace which he will love. He is drawn well at gate 2 and M J Odendaal knows him very well.
S’IL VOUS PLAIT is in good form and dug down deep to win in Gauteng last time. He is no stranger to this track and he finished well for a close third behind RIVER CROSSING in the Lonsdale over 2400m in his penultimate outing. He should handle this trip and must be respected.
BLAKE is now 2.5kgs better off with KOLKATA for a 3.75 lengths beating in the Gold Vase.

Run For It

Winning Form’s Magic Tips Comments:

WHITELINE FEVER is right up there with the best of his generation and once again might have finished a little closer in the July, last time. He dropped back a bit entering the home straight and then made steady progress to finish sixth. This drop in trip will suit him right down to the ground and his jockey knows him very well, which is a major plus. The son of Right Approach is slightly out at the weights but will be aided by pole position and should be very competitive here. Admittedly, he seems to prefer a more galloping track.
UN FOR IT confirmed that he has improved since being gelded and he was outrun late into a heart-breaking second in the July last time. The drop in trip won’t pose a concern and he gets Strydom in the irons. He is joint best-weighted in this event and should give another very good account of himself. Having said that, one can’t help but feel that he may be at his level best with a pair of blinkers.
JACKSON made his long awaited winter season debut and he ran on eye-catchingly for 4th in the Mercury Sprint over 1200m, 2 weeks ago. That was after a lengthy 23 week break and he will be much fitter today. He has some work to do at the weights but must be included.
