SMART CALL from the Alec Laird stable has won the R2.5 million 2016 J&B Met! A chance ride for jockey JP van der Merwe, she cruised home in the 2000m to win by 3 lengths over favourite Legal Eagle, followed by Captain America, and Light the Lights.
Incredible achievement for JP van der Merwe, who was only announced to ride Smart Call this morning (Saturday 30th January), after Weichong Marwing withdrew from ridding the filly. This is trainer Alec Laird’s second J&B Met victory, with his first coming in 1997 with the superstar horse London News. Smart Call is owned by Mauritzfontein (Pty) Ltd (Nom: J B Slack).
