HANDICAP BETTING
Handicap betting gives both sides an equal chance of winning the match by either adding or deducting points from their end score. Weaker teams are given a plus handicap which means they begin the match with points already on the board, while the stronger of the two is given a minus handicap which means they start with a negative amount of points and have to score more to make up the deficit.

The handicap market is an exciting market that makes one-sided games more interesting.  This market makes the “playing field even” when one side is better than the other.

Betting Options:
Example New Zealand v France
New Zealand (-10.5)
France (+10.5)

Example:
New Zealand are playing France, and the New Zealand are the stronger team.  The handicap market could well look like this:

New Zealand (-10.5) 9/10 vs France (+10.5) 9/10

Because New Zealand are the stronger team here, they will start the game 10.5 points behind.  If you believe New Zealand will win the game by more than 10.5 points, then you will back New Zealand (-10.5).

Because France are the weaker team, they will start the game 10.5 points ahead.  If you believe that France will either win the game, or lose by less than 10.5 points, then you would bet on France (+10.5).

The half point in the handicap rules out the tie, leaving you with a better opportunity of winning on the handicap (only two options).

Note that the points are only deducted or added to the team that you bet on.  One does not take off points from one side and add points to the other.

Therefore if the score line at the end of 80 minutes was this:

New Zealand 30 – 20 France

If you backed New Zealand, you would minus 10.5 points from their score.  Therefore the score would read as:

New Zealand 19.5 – 20 France

Therefore if you backed the New Zealand (-10.5) your bet would be a losing bet. This is because they have lost the game on the handicap.

If you backed France on the handicap, you would add 10.5 points to their score.  Therefore the score would read as:

New Zealand 30 – 30.5 France

Therefore if you backed France at (+10.5), your bet would be a winning bet, as they have won the game on the handicap (despite actually losing the game).

Tip – Look for value in the plus handicaps when you think a team may lose the game, but you feel they will put up a fight and not lose by many points.

1ST SCORING POINTS
Bet on which team will score the first points in the match, as well as the method of scoring the points.

Betting Options:
Home Team & Penalty
Home Team & Try
Away Team & Penalty
Away Team & Try
Any Team & Drop Goal

There are 3 ways to score points in the game of rugby.
1. A team can kick a penalty – 3 points awarded
2. A team can kick a drop goal – 3 points awarded
3. A team can score a try – 5 points awarded (A try results in an additional kick for poles called a conversion, this is worth 2 points)

Example:
New Zealand (H) v France (A)
New Zealand score the first points of the game with a try. Therefore the winning market is NEW ZEALAND & TRY.

Example:
France are awarded a penalty in the 2nd minute of the game, and get it over the posts to score the first points of the game. Therefore the winning market is FRANCE & PENALTY.

Example:
France open the scoring with a drop goal, and put their team on the scoreboard first. Therefore the winning option is ANY TEAM & DROP GOAL.

1ST TRY SCORER
Bet on which player, according to their position, will score the first try of the match. This is based on the position allocated by their jersey number. The first try can be scored by either team in the match.

Betting Options:
Any Forward
Scrumhalf, Flyhalf or Any Centre
Fullback or Any Wing
No Try Scorer
Any Team Penalty Try

The last option in this bet type is Any Team Penalty Try. A penalty try is a try awarded to a side by the referee when a touchdown is prevented due to an offence by the opposition.

Playing positions according to jersey number:
FORWARDS (1-8)
1 & 3 – Prop
2 – Hooker
4 & 5 – Locks
6 & 7 – Flanks
8 – Eighth Man

BACKS (9-15)
9 – Scrumhalf
10 – Flyhalf
11 & 14 – Wings
12 & 13 – Centres
15 – Fullback

Example:
South Africa v Australia
Bryan Habana scores the first try in the match, giving South Africa 5 points. Bryan Habana’s jersey number in the match is 11, as he is playing wing. Therefore the winning market is FULLBACK OR ANY WING.

South Africa v Australia
Victory Matfield scores the first try in the match, giving South Africa 5 points. Matfield’s jersey number is 4, as he is playing lock. Therefore the winning market is ANY FORWARD.

South Africa v Australia
Australia purposefully obstruct play, denying South Africa a sure try. The referee awards a penalty try to South Africa.  Therefore the winning market here is ANY TEAM PENALTY TRY.

South Africa v Australia
South Africa beat Australia solely on penalties, winning the game 12-3. No tries have been scored in the match. Therefore the winning market here is NO TRY SCORER.

Note – this is an 80 minute market. Therefore once the final whistle goes after 80 minutes, and there is no try, then the winning market will be NO TRY SCORER. Any tries scored in extra time played after the final whistle will not count towards this market. (This will only occur should a game finish in a draw after the 80 minutes final whistle).

Tip – Look for a player on each side in the same position that both have a strong try scoring history.

DOUBLE RESULT
HOME TEAM – HOME TEAM
HOME TEAM – AWAY TEAM
ANY DRAW RESULT
AWAY TEAM – HOME TEAM
AWAY TEAM – AWAY TEAM
This bet type includes the halftime result and the fulltime result. For example if I think the Home team will win the first half but the Away team will win the match, then I will choose Home Team – Away Team as my Double Result selection.

5 WAY WINNING MARGIN

HOME TEAM BY 13 OR MORE POINTS
HOME TEAM BY 1 TO 12 POINTS INCL
DRAW
AWAY TEAM BY 1 TO 12 POINTS INCL
AWAY TEAM BY 13 OR MORE POINTS

This bet type is a great one to play if you would like to predict a margin of victory. Let’s say you like the Home team to win a match, but you don’t think they will win by more than 12 points. Then you would select Home Team by 1 to 12 points incl.

Tip –  I might like the Away team to win a certain match and I think they can win by a big margin, so I will then choose Away Team by 13 or more points.  The odds are fantastic in this market, so get your thinking cap on and make a prediction.
