Rugby World Cup 2019: Best World Cup Springbok XV

Darry Worthington takes a look at the major Rugby World Cup 2019 news that has come out this past week.

With the Rugby World Cup just a few weeks away and warm-up games coming thick and fast,  it’s getting to the point where injuries and the form of key players could derail a sides campaigns.

Below, we take a look at the latest World Cup news for the week of the 5th of August.

Faletau Injured
Wales have been hit with a massive injury blow just a few weeks before the start of the global showpiece with backrower Taluape Faletau being ruled out of the tournament with a clavicle injury.

While the Dragons are well-stocked for loose forwards, they will definitely miss Faletau’s strong ball carries off the tail of the scrum.

Last Auditions for Springboks
The Springboks will play Argentina in back-to-back games over the next fortnight and the doubleheader will be the last chance for players to push themselves into Rassie Erasmus’ squad for the World Cup.

There are a number of household names who find themselves in precarious positions with Marcel Coetzee, one of the wingers (Mapimpi or possibly Dyanti) and one of the props who have participated in the Rugby Championship set to be culled from the World Cup squad.

Erasmus has some tough decisions to make over the next few weeks with the two games against Argentina likely to influence the ‘Bok mentors thinking.

Japan Continue to Impress
The Brave Blossoms continued their impressive World Cup build-up as they beat Tonga 41-7. The game illustrated just how effective Japan can be on the counter with the Tongans kicking a lot of ball away to the dangerous Japanese back three.

This weekend will see Japan take on the United States in the final round of the Pacific Nations Cup.

Namibia Name Extended Squad
It may be late in the day but Namibia are getting their World Cup preparations underway naming a  51-man extended squad that will head into camp in the coming days. There are some notable absentees to this list with South Africa-based Michael Haznar having failed to make the squad despite putting in some solid displays for the Griquas in this year’s Currie Cup.
