SuperSport Challenge Final: Pumas v Griquas Preview

Things we learned from Super Rugby week 17 and the Top 14 semi-finals

The Pumas and Griquas will go head-to-head in the 2019 SuperSport Rugby Challenge Final. Darry Worthington previews the game below.

After months of highly entertaining action, the SuperSport Rugby Challenge will come to a close out in Saldanha Bay on Sunday the 23rd of June. This is the third edition of the tournament and it has been a great initiative with domestic rugby being taken to all parts of South Africa.

This is also a tournament close to us at Hollywoodbets as we have sponsored a few of the clubs that have hosted rounds of the tournament and played in the curtain raisers.

Picturesque Saldanha Bay will host this year’s final and it should be an absolute cracker with both teams playing some fantastic running rugby this term.

Pumas
The Pumas have now gone two seasons without suffering a defeat having won the tournament last year and won their seven pool phase games before beating a solid Boland Cavilliers side 57-32 last Sunday.

Jimmy Stonehouse’s men have been brilliant in attack this term and have scored four or more tries in all eight of their matches. They ended the regular season with the best points differential of all the teams in the tournament finishing with +179 points, which was 30 points better than their nearest rivals, Western Province.

Griquas
The Griquas will be looking to avenge their last minute 32-30 loss to the Pumas in the 2018 final when they square off with the same opponents this coming weekend.

While the men from Griqualand weren’t as all-conquering during the regular season they did manage to win six of their seven fixtures with their only defeat being a 37-28 defeat to this weekend’s opponents.

Like the Pumas, the Griquas also impressed in the semi-finals as they beat a talented young Western Province side 21-50.

Verdict: Pumas 4/7
The previous two editions of the tournament has been won by the side who advanced to the final undefeated. I can see that happening again this year.
