SuperSport United win the 2017 MTN8

Final PreviewThe 2017 MTN8 final produced a dramatic turn of events as it ended all square in regulation time. This is how the match panned out.

Cape Town City drew first blood as Sibusiso Masina’s 23rd minute strike gave them the lead. Everyone thought it was all over in the second half as Cape Town City defended resolutely until substitute, Thabo Mnyamane popped up with the equaliser 10 minutes from time.

That goal came at a cost though as Mnyamane injured himself in the process and all three SuperSport substitutions had been used up. Matsatsatsa had to soldier on with 10 men for the last 10 minutes and the entire duration of extra time.

In the second half of extra time the same fate befell SuperSport United again as Clayton Daniels limped off and returned after a few minutes still clutching his hamstring on the pitch throughout the match, meaning Matsatsantsa actually had nine players who were still fit to play.

The Citizens would fail to capitalise on their numerical advantage and only penalties could decide the outcome.

SuperSport United won the penalty shootout 4-2 as Ronwen Williams save Judas Moseamedi and Lyle Lakay’s spot kicks.
