Mercedes will be looking to bounce back from their horror show in Austria when the field takes to Silverstone on Sunday the 8th of July.
After enduring their “worst race” in recent memory, Mercedes will be looking to bounce back at Silverstone. The track has been a very happy hunting ground for the Silver Arrows in the recent past with the main man, Lewis Hamilton, winning the last four Grand Prix’s held there.

It all went pair-shaped out in Austria for Mercedes with pole sitter Valtteri Bottas and the second fastest qualifier Lewis Hamilton being forced out of the race due to mechanical issues. With both Silver Arrows out of the reckoning, the door was left wide open for Ferrari and Red Bull to capitalize. And while the latter team saw Daniel Ricciardo retire, they still will have been thrilled with Ricciardo’s teammate Max Verstappen taking race honours.
Ferrari also enjoyed a solid outing as Kimi Raikkonen (2nd) and Sebastian Vettel – who had started the race near the tail of the field – rounded out the podium.
Like Ferrari, Haas will also be pleased with their showing at the Red Bull Ring as Romain Grosjean, who finished fourth, was followed across the line by teammate Kevin Magnussen. The top six was rounded out by Esteban Ocon who was followed across the line by his Force India teammate Sergio Perez.
Fernando Alonso made an appearance in the top ten, as he brought his McLaren across the line in eighth. The veteran Spaniard was joined in the top half of the field by Charles Leclerc and Marcus Eriksson.
Track
The teams head for one of the most iconic race tracks this weekend, Silverstone. The track, which functioned as Royal Air Force base at the close of the Second World War, has been a has been a staple on the modern Formula 1 calendar since hosting its inaugural race – back in 1987.
The total race distance for Sunday will be 306.332km with each of the 52 laps containing 18 turns. The corners that will provide the biggest challenge to drivers will be the amalgamation of Maggots, Becketts and Chappel, the left-right-left-right-left combination will push the cars’ dexterity to their limits. The track’s two DRS zones are located at the Wellington Straight and the pit straight.
England is currently experiencing one of its hottest summers on record but we may well see a bit of rain at Silverstone this Sunday with late afternoon drizzle set to be present during both Saturday’s final qualifying session as well as Sunday’s main race.
Value Bet
Fastest In Practice 1 – Daniel Ricciardo 6/1
This is a bit of a speculator but I think Mercedes may hold their cars back in the practice sessions due to the mechanical issues they experienced at last week’s Austrian Grand Prix. This could well open the door for Daniel Ricciardo to take the fastest Practice 1 lap accolade. The Red Bull’s have shown decent pace this season and they may be looking to see how their tyres will fair when given a few rapid laps. A small punt on this market is my play.

I know Mercedes head into this one off the back of a woeful showing in Austria but I simply cannot help backing the ‘Brit to come good here. He has an all-conquering record at the track winning the last four Grand Prix held here.
