This year’s title fight between Hamilton and Max Verstappen has produced a number of controversial moments, the most recentt of which saw Red Bull’s lead driver hit with two separate time penalties during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

The second incident saw Verstappen break-check Hamilton, prompting the suggestion that the Dutch driver could once gain tangle with his title rival on track this Sunday.

Sensing the potential for more controversial incidents in Abu Dhabi this weekend, the F1 race director Michael Masi has moved to clarify the rules of engagement.

And Hamilton has welcomed the move, telling Sky Sports: “Honestly, I think it’s such a hard job that the stewards have and Michael has, and I think they’ve done an amazing job given everything that’s thrown at them, and every different scenario is always different.

“Whether you agree with every decision or not, I think they have such a tough job.

“I think it’s great that it’s clear to everyone. Not only like secretly in the background in our books as competitors, but it’s clear that everyone knows what the rules are and so that things that have happened in the past are avoided.”

Hamilton and Verstappen are tied on 369.5 points in the Drivers’ Championship, while Mercedes are leading the Constructors’ Championship by 28 points.
