Aberdeen Asset Scottish Open 2017 Preview

The Aberdeen Asset Scotish Open Betting Preview

Our golf scribe previews this week’s European Tour event, the Aberdeen Asset Scottish Open.

This week will see yet another illustrious edition of what is fast becoming a rather intriguing Rolex series. You have to hand it to the European Tour organisers. They have gone through inordinate pains to keep the tour competitive with the grand rewards on offer in the states, and the last three tournaments have been a testament to that success. Obviously, preparation for the Open Championship has been partially responsible for the deluge of great players jumping the pond, but I don’t quite remember seeing such great fields in three consecutive weeks in Europe for quite some time.

It’s rather interesting to see that Ricky Fowler is leading Rory in the current betting markets. Rory has missed two consecutive cuts and really doesn’t deserve favourite status, but nonetheless, this is quite an indicator of the extent to which the Northern Irishman has fallen. If I have to hear one more post-cut interview about how well he is hitting the ball I may actually implode. Henrik Stenson will be hoping to get a good tune up before his Open defence while Patrick Reed hopes to add to his growing reputation as a links specialist.

Situated on the Ayrshire coast, the Kyle Phillips-designed course is supposedly meant to replicate Kingsbarnes. It shouldn’t provide too much of a test at a tick over 7,000 yards. I expect some of these players on show could absolutely devastate the course if the winds remain placid. Alex Noren will be hoping to defend his title and build on a rather incredible year. Victory at Castle Stuart last year was really the catalyst for the incredible season that has seen him emerge as the natural successor to Stenson’s crown of ice-cold Swede.

Value Bets

Matt Kuchar – To Win 20/1 & To Place 44/10

If there’s anybody in world golf who is due a bit of recognition – now that Sergio has that pesky Major under his belt – it’s Kuchar. The Florida native has a short game that is tailor made for the perils of links golf. The model of consistency. Kuchar – lurking quietly inside the top 20 of the world rankings – has finished inside the top 16 in six of his last eight events. He’s always a decent bet for a run in the place markets, though his inability to seal the deal in terms of wins is slightly disconcerting.

Ross Fisher – To Win 33/1 & To Place 7/1

After finishing third at the WGC in Mexico, Fisher consolidated an impressive start to the American season with a quarter-final appearance at the World Match-Play. His form dipped somewhat on the American tour, but his form in Europe has been far more impressive. His last four forays on the continent read 3-6-9-7. He was beaten in a playoff at the Alfred Dunhill Links in 2008 before finishing second again last year – clearly highlighting his links credentials. He finished seventh in this event two years ago and led the Open in 2009 before a nary finish. Expect him to do well this week.

Thomas Detry – To Win 140/1 & To Place 30/1

I think I may have been a tad guilty of going for the steady reliable options of late, so I think it’s time for a change of pace this week. Detry has been playing second fiddle to Thomas Pieters in terms of being the bright young Belgian talent, but I think he may be on the verge of making a major breakthrough, especially at these rather ludicrous odds. He was exceptional at the BMW International Open, were it not for the fairytale story of Romero he could have picked up a remarkable title. Though he missed the cut the following week, there were enough good signs in Northern Ireland to suggest he could on the verge of cracking through.

The Man to Beat

Adam Scott –  To Win 20/1 & To Place 44/10
Adam Scott has been in something of a malaise of late, but 20/1 represents excellent value for one of the best exponents of links golf in the world. His capitulation in the 2012 Open Championship is the stuff of lore, but you have to believe that the Aussie could turn out this week. The last time he entered this event was 2009 – where he finished a respectable fourth at Loch Lomond. I just think that the lack of fanfare will prove hugely beneficial for Scott as he aims to return to the helicon days of that majestic Masters triumph.
