KLM Open | Thursday 11 September – Sunday 14 September | Kennemer

The European Tour heads to Holland this week for the KLM Open, a tournament is one of the most entertaining to watch on the Tour. Last year this was certainly the case, as local boy Joost Luiten claimed victory in front of an incredible crowd. Hopefully the fact that he will be making another appearance means the spectators follow. Despite the fact that the tournament wasn’t hosted at Kennemer last year, Luiten still finds himself as favourite, which is due in part to the fact that he finished runner-up on this course in 2007. The course itself consists of 27 holes and the actual manner in which the tournament will be structured, which appears to be horribly confusing, is beyond the scope of this column. What is relevant is that the course resembles one of the classic links courses. The fairways are undulating and really tight with thick rough waiting to punish any wayward drives or approaches. The greens are also large, so accuracy with the irons will be key if players want to attack the pin. Overall this will be an entertaining tournament so get your bets on early and enjoy the ride.

To Win Outright
Joost Luiten  12/1
Brooks Koepka  18/1
Paul Casey  20/1
Thomas Bjorn  22/1
Tommy Fleetwood  25/1

VALUE BETS
Shane Lowry (28/1 a win, 5/1 a place)
It’s tough to ignore Shane Lowry on a links course and this week is no different, so it’s surprising to see the Irishman on offer at such a big price. Despite a slight slump in form he looked to be hitting the ball really well again last week where he finished T13 against a field of similar quality to this one. Lowry has been playing some good golf this season and has been rewarded with a number of Top 5 and 10 place finishes and I’m sure he’ll be looking to end his season of with a bang. Each way here looks a great bet.

Tyrrell Hatton (80/1 a win, 15/1 a place)
One of Shane Lowry’s better finishes this year came in the Scottish Open when he finished in T4 and in that tournament he tied with Tyrrell Hatton. As you would expect from a player who is new to the Tour, Hatton has had a very up-and-down season but when he’s been in form he’s come close to winning and I think this may be the week he claims his maiden Tour victory. His T3 last week showed he has what it takes to go close, the question is whether he can take that extra step this time around. Each way looks like a great value bet.

Simon Dyson (28/1 a win, 5/1 a place)
Simon Dyson will come here brimming with confidence and based on his tournament form alone he cannot be ignored this week. He’s won this tournament an incredible three times and to top that off one of those wins came here at Kennemer. He came close to making it four last year but a few missed opportunities saw him finish in a respectable third. 28/1 is a great price so get on.

TOP BET: Joost Luiten (12/1 a win, 22/10 a place)
I couldn’t be bothered to back Luiten at 22/10 a place so I’m going all out and backing the Dutchman to win here this week. Last year he played some great golf in front of strong home support and despite the fact that he has had a disappointing season I have a feeling that being back home will do him wonders. Luiten has been around for long enough to know that in golf you have to take the good with the bad so don’t expect this slump in form to get him down in a tournament he enjoys so much.
