The Deutsche Bank Championship | Thursday 28 August – Sunday 31 August | TPC Boston

Round two of the FedEx Cup playoffs tees off at TPC Boston this week and there are now only 100 players remaining, a number that will continue to be whittled down until only thirty of the world’s best remain for the Tour Championship. Last week, Hunter Mahan proved that he is always one to watch at this stage in the season and having opened at 50/1 for that event, the talented ginger now finds himself seventh in the betting and available at 22/1. I don’t think he can win two on the trot though so will be looking for a bit of value elsewhere, especially when you consider that this course is going to suit players who consistently go low. The course poses no real challenges and plays fairly short so the key to winning here is ensuring that no opportunities are missed. Putting is obviously going to be key but with that in mind, you’ll do well to look for players who do well on par 5s as well as those who are accurate with their irons from 150-175 yards. Overall this is going to be a great weekend for golf and the Deutsche Bank Championship should provide us with hours of entertainment. It’ll be even better if we win some money though. Let’s try do just that.

To Win Outright
Rory McIlroy  4/1
Adam Scott  10/1
Henrik Stenson  16/1
Jason Day  16/1
Matt Kuchar  20/1

VALUE BETS
Jordan Spieth (30/1 a win, 66/10 a place)
Jordan Spieth has gone off the boil a bit but that slump means that his starting price just keeps growing and I believe it’s only a matter of time before he snaps back into shape and claims another victory. Amazingly, after an incredible hot streak earlier in the season he’s now struggling to make it into the Top 25 but last week he showed glimpses of his old self and played some great golf, especially on the final day. When he’s at his best he has the ability to make a lot of birdies so here’s hoping he comes out firing this week. Each way is the bet for me.

Bo Van Pelt (80/1 a win, 17/1 a place)
I can’t believe that Bo Van Pelt is on offer at 80/1 this week because in my mind it’s only a matter of time before he strings four rounds together and wins a tournament. Last week he came out firing and looked a serious contender after Round 1, but as we all know, golf is a game of four rounds and a slip up later on saw him finish a respectable, but slightly disappointing, T13. Prior to that he managed a T14 though so looks a serious prospect for a T10 finish. Hollywood have him available at 72/10 for a Top 10, so I suggest you focus there. Don’t completely avoid backing him to win though, 80/1 is a great price and you could be kicking yourself come Sunday.

Brandt Snedeker (40/1 a win, 36/10 a place)
Brandt Snedeker always seems to up his game around this time of the year and proved that a couple of weeks back where he finished in T5 at the Wyndham Championship. Although the competition wasn’t as stiff then as it is now, it’s still surprising to see the man from Tennessee available at what looks like a very generous 40/1. Each way on Snedeker is the bet for me, you should do the same.

TOP BET: Zach Johnson (60/1 a win, 54/10 a place)
Zach Johnson doesn’t hit the ball long and whilst that poses a challenge almost every week on the Tour, the fact that distance means little here is going to play right into his hands. He kicked the season off with a bang and has played some great golf but much like Jordan Spieth, Johnson seems to have entered a bit of a slump over the past few weeks. Despite that I think that he’ll be making a lot of birdies in Boston this week and at 60/1 he can’t be overlooked.
