WGC Cadillac Championship | Thursday 06 March – Sunday 09 March | TPC Blue Monster
The second instalment of the WGC takes place this week and if last time around is anything to go by, this is going to be a hotly contested tournament. TPC Blue Monster will host for the eighth time but course form won’t be much of a guide as the course has undergone some major renovations. Nearly every hole has been altered, although the signature 18th has been left as is, and overall the analysts are saying that the course is longer and tighter and should provide a far greater challenge overall. This isn’t saying a lot though as traditionally the course has been one of the easiest on the Tour, so it’ll be interesting to see how players score this week. Overall, the winner of this one will need to have all the bases covered as the long par 5s require big hitting whilst the par 4s have been designed so as to place a premium on iron play. So who will win this one? Let’s have a look.
To Win Outright
Rory McIlroy 7/1
Adam Scott 12/1
Tiger Woods 12/1
Dustin Johnson 18/1
Jason Day 20/1
VALUE BETS
Adam Scott (12/1 a win, 26/10 a place)
Adam Scott will be keen to continue the Aussie domination of the WGC events this year and he’s made the effort to enter this one so it seems he thinks he has a real chance. So far this season he’s managed three top twenty finishes, but he hasn’t played all that much, so those are decent stats. The best was a sixth at the competitive Hyundai Tournament of Champions where he played some impressive golf and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how he goes this week. 12/1 on the talented Australian looks fair, so get on.
Sergio Garcia (20/1 a win, 44/10 a place)
Few players can boast a run of current form like Sergio Garcia. His victory in Qatar was the best of a number of solid finishes over the past few months and since August he has not finished outside the top twenty. An eighth at the Honda was another solid performance by the Major-less Spaniard and he’ll certainly be eager to improve on that here. Although the course has changed considerably he will come here confident after finishing T3 last year. Each way on Garcia is the bet for me.
Zach Johnson (33/1 a win, 73/10 a place)
Zach Johnson will be looking to claim his first WGC title this week and I reckon he has a real chance of doing just that. An unbelievable run of form at the beginning of the year saw him finish 1st, 1st, T8 and T3 and although he has slowed down considerably since, he is by no means one to be ignored this week. Much like Simpson, he possesses a great all round game and with his incredibly accurate driving he’ll be giving himself chances on every hole. Each way here is the bet for me.
TOP BET: Webb Simpson (40/1 a win, 88/10 a place)
It’s nothing short of amazing that Webb Simpson is available at such a generous price this week and I certainly can’t see the 40/1 being available for much longer. He’s a Major champion who comes into this on the back of some good form, bar an uncharacteristic T70 finish at the Northern Trust Open. He also has the all-round game to go far here. Overall, based on his stats he is one of the best players on the Tour and although the competition is stiff there are few players who look like they will rival Simpson. Each way here is the bet for me.
