Teko Modise – The General

Teko Modise AKA ‘The General’ will go down as one of the best ever midfielders to grace our screens, and indeed to captain the national football team – Bafana Bafana.

Born in Soweto and raised in Diepkloof by his mother, Modise not only became a star, but also a symbol of hope to many young boys and girls who shared similar upbringings.

Regarded as one of the greatest PSL players of his era, Teko had a stunning career, making his name as both a goal scorer and creator after launching his professional career in the lower leagues of South African football with Ria Stars and City Pillars.

During his time with the latter, he won the Mvela Golden League Player of the Season award but will best be remembered for his electrifying performance against Kaizer Chiefs in the Absa Cup even though Amakhosi would knock them out.

After his impressive stint with Pillars, Modise caught the eye of Pitso Mosimane who signed him for SuperSport United in August of 2006 – making a return to top-flight football.

He would only spend one season with Matsatsantsa before joining local rivals Orlando Pirates with whom he spent six years. This included a debut season for the record books where he became the first player to be awarded the PSL Footballer of the Year accolade – leading to him becoming a regular within the national team set-up and earning himself the nickname ‘The General’ for his ability to direct play and his incredible range of passing. That same year, Teko was named SAFA Footballer of the Year.

It wasn’t until 26th May 2007 that he made his debut for Bafana Bafana against Malawi in the COSAFA Cup. He then scored his first international goal that same year against Mauritius during the tournament and went on to make the cut for the National’s team 2010 FIFA World Cup which was hosted by South Africa.

In 2011, he left the Sea Robbers and signed for rivals Mamelodi Sundowns on January 27th. Here he once again impressed with his outstanding performances, and was named PSL Midfielder of the Season and Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament. He was handed the captain’s armband in his second season.

Teko and Sundowns later went on to win the biggest club competition in African football when they beat Zamalek in the final to lift the CAF Champions League title in 2016.

After a six-and-a-half-year spell with the Brazilians, Teko ended his stay and went in search of a new club and some more game time. That club would be Cape Town City – and Modise and his new teammates would go on to play his former club SuperSport in the final of the MTN8.

Though they lost that final, Teko and City went on to win it the next season against the same opponent. The following year, the Bafana Bafana international called time on his career and closed the curtain on one of the most incredible stories of South African football.
