Vernon Philander - The Surgeon
Vernon Philander is one of the finest red-ball all-rounders South Africa has ever produced. Reaching 50 wickets in just seven Tests, he would go on to take 224 scalps in 64 games.
While not blessed with the out-and-out pace of Morne Morkel or Dale Steyn, his unerring accuracy and ability to move the ball off the seam saw him regularly rip through top orders with the new ball.
He sensationally became the second-fastest player to reach 50 Test wickets, reaching the milestone in only his seventh match. He would go on to become the sixth-fastest player to reach 100 Test wickets in 2016 while playing in his 19th Test.
While his performances with the ball stole headlines the world over, he was no mug with the willow. Boasting a Test batting average of 24.04, he had notched eight half-centuries by the end of his career.
He would also make a number of appearances for the Proteas in the shorter formats of the game. The five-day game, however, is where the Surgeon shone brightest.
As well as representing the Proteas, Philander also turned out for Western Province and the Cape Cobras domestically, he also played for the likes of Kent, Middlesex, Nottinghamshire, Devon, and the Jamaica Tallawahs.
