Race 4.

With the late scratching of one of his main rivals, the door may have opened for MACCOMO to chalk up his fourth career victory. He showed marked improvement to win his last start over 1500M by 1.8L. when going from jump to wire and holding off all the lates challengers in the dash down to the line. From his handy draw three and with having 2kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice, he looks to be the one to side with here. FIORDLAND followed up his penultimate run victory over a mile with a third place finish next time out, 2.3L back from the winner, but he jumped awkwardly that day and was bumped shortly after the start. In addition, his jockey put up 1kg overweight. He faces a wide draw thirteen, but he should still nevertheless be right up there when they hit the finishing post. RICH AND SHAMELESS is seldom far off the action and overraced in the early stages before finishing sixth last time out over 1500M, just over three lengths behind the winner. He is drawn the widest of them all in gate fourteen, but on the plus side, he will have 1.5kgs removed from his allocated weight courtesy of his claiming apprentice.

Race 5.

MY DEMETRA is a 6yr old mare taking on the boys, but she had her consistency rewarded with a head victory last time out over 1900M. She went from gun to tape that day and jumping from her gate five, she could prove difficult to reel in over the closing stages of the race. The same comment about consistency can be made of JUST A JEDI who also won his last start over the 1900M, but in his case, by 0.8L. He kicked clear at the 180M mark that day and kept going strongly to hold off all the late challengers. He will have to negotiate draw twelve, but he should be doing his best work late. MAID OF ORE is a 7yr old mare who was slowly away and came three wide into the home straight when making solid improvement to finish second to the top choice last time out in the race mentioned above. She has a cozy draw two and is 1.5kgs better off at today’s weights, which should be enough for the result of that last race to be reversed, but the former is preferred as she is far more consistent. However, the latter will be partnered by ex-SA jockey Keagan Latham, who will give her all the necessary assistance from the saddle.

Race 6.

Three 5yr old mares could fight out the finish to this race and complete the trifecta, but the day’s value bet, MIDSUMMER RAIN is taken to lead the pack home. She has finished closer to the winner in each of her last three runs, the latest when second over 1100M, just a head off the victor. She raced up with the leaders that day and then battled all the way down to the wire. She faces a wide gate ten, but she should be doing her best work late. EYE SEE THINGS on the other hand has cracked pole position and won her penultimate start over 1300M, but then disappointed when finishing seventh in her next outing over six furlongs, nine and a half lengths adrift of the winner and was immediately rested for 23 weeks. She returns here after winning her only barrier trials to showcase her well-being and will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways today. CALESCENT showed plenty of toe when winning her latest start over five furlongs by 1.8L. She jumps from gate seven and will have the services of a 3kgs claiming apprentice, so should not be lightly dismissed in this line-up.

Race 7.

The day’s best bet, NASTURTIUM has only had the two runs too date, winning on debut over 1100M and then completing his double over the same sprint distance by putting two and a half lengths between himself and the opposition. He was eased up over the latter stages that day, so the winning margin could have been great than what it is officially recorded as. From draw four, he could prove to be too good for this field and go on to complete his hat-trick. QUATENUS is a 4yr old filly taking on males, but her six runs to date have yielded three wins, two seconds and one third place finish. She came four wide into the home straight before winning her last outing over six furlongs by a head and from one gate inside the top pick, she could emerge as the biggest threat to the top choice. MIRACLE DAY missed out on his quartet of victories when finishing fourth last time out over 11100M, one and a half lengths off the winner. He stayed on well that day and from draw five, he will be hoping to spring back to winning ways today.
