Race 5.

MARWAY missed out on his hat-trick when finishing fourth last time out over five furlongs, three lengths behind the winner. He tried to go from jump to wire that day and did battled all the way home. He is a nine-time winner who has his peak run here after returning from a lengthy 42-week absence and whist having the widest draw of them all, he looks to be the one to side with here. VOWMASTER also missed out on his trio of victories when finishing fifth in his latest outing over 1100M, 5.4L back from the winner when returning from a 13-week rest. He on the other hand has only had the three runs to date and overraced in the early stages of that last start and then came three wide into the straight, so that effort should probably be ignored. From gate six, he could threaten the top choice. TINKER MCPHEE is a 3yr old filly taking on the boys and drops back to sprinting after two runs over seven furlongs and the latest over a mile, when just over a length and a half behind the winner, but that was in the Group 1 NZ Fillies Guineas, so that effort was encouraging. She has her first run in Australia, but has had the benefit of two barrier trials, finishing second in the latest. She is drawn one inside the latter and if not finding the trip too sharp, she should be right up there when they hit the line.

Race 6.

ARCHANNA is a 4yr old filly taking on males, but she followed up her penultimate run victory over 1900M with a sixth-place finish next time out when dropping back to 1300M, finishing just over four lengths adrift of the winner. However, nothing went her way in that race, as she overraced in the middle stages and then had to be steadied at the 800M mark, before finishing strongly over the latter stages. In addition, she was reported to have spread a shoe during the running of that race. She jumps from gate six and is taken to be the best bet on the day’s card. ABOVE AND BEYOND is drawn two outside the former and has finished second in his last two outings over 1500M, beaten a head in both of them. He was hampered at the start and then overraced in the middle of that race, before coming the widest into the home straight. To add to his misfortune, he took a bump at the 50M pole. He looks the obvious danger to the top pick. GLAMOUR FOX is another 4yr old filly in the race. She had her consistency rewarded with a head victory last time out over a mile, this despite being held up in the early stages of the race. She has a kinder draw four and should be involved in the finish.

Race 7.

The powerful Chris Waller stable could saddle the first two past the post in this contest and secure the exacta, but BROOKSPIRE, is made the stable elect. She won her penultimate start over this c&d and then finished strongly to end up in third place next time out over the same c&d, just over three and a half lengths back from the winner, despite hanging over the latter stages. She has only had the three runs to date finishing first, second and third in those three outings. She jumps from a handy draw two which should aid her cause. Her stable companion, EASIFAR returns from a 15-week rest and has not had the benefit of a barrier trial, so her fitness will have to be taken on trust. Like her stable mate, she won her penultimate start over seven furlongs and then finished fourth next time out over a mile, three and a half lengths behind the victor. She is also lightly raced having only had just the four outings to date. She jumps from gate four and is a solid back-up for the stable. EXPRESS PRINCESS made solid improvement to win her last start over 1300M by 1.8L. She hit the front at the 200M mark that day and then held off all challengers over the closing stages. She will have to negotiate the widest draw of them all in gate eleven, but gets the services of ex-SA jockey Keagan Latham, so will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle.

Race 8.

Today’s value bet, EXCELTIC has consistent formlines to his name and has finished third in his last two runs, the latest over six furlongs, when just under a half length behind the winner. He only saw daylight at the 250M mark that day before finishing well and seems likely to turn in another honest performance in this line-up. He faces a wide draw ten, but on the plus side, he will get 2kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice. HIGHMASTER on the other hand has cracked pole position and although recorded as finishing eighth last time out over nine furlongs, he was just under four and a half lengths off the winner. He drops in distance today, but it should be noted that he won over 1500M three runs back, so this should not be an issue. He returns from a 20-week rest, but has posted two encouraging barrier trials. BLESK showed marked improvement when finishing second in his latest outing over six furlongs, 1.3L behind the winner when returning from a 23-week break. He was friendless in the betting markets that day, but if he is able to reproduce that last effort, he should be included in all bets, despite facing a wideish draw nine.
