Longines Dubai Sheema Classic – Preview
In what should prove a rewarding night for Charlie Appleby OLD PERSIAN is by that trainer’s admission one of his trump cards and possibly the ace of spades ♠️.
A much improved stayer on turf last year, when he finished fifth in the St Leger, the physically impressive four-year-old might have been short of his best when scraping home on his only outing at the Carnival three weeks ago. Punters have taken the view that William Buick’s mount will come on for that satisfactory first foray onto the Meydan turf.
REY DE ORO is a lightly-raced Japanese raider who although now five has scope for improvement off just five career starts. He finished second in the big mile and a half race at Nakayama in December and has looked the part in his work this week.
MAGIC WAND, the only filly in the race, is possibly Aidan O’Brien’s best chance of a winner on the night. She proved that she’d trained on with a more than respectful second to Bricks And Mortar in a Stakes race at the Pegasus World Cup meeting in Florida and that appears to have brought her nicely to the boil.
With form figures of 2322 this year, RACING HISTORY has the look of a perennial bridegroom but Saeed Bin Suroor’s charge shouldn’t be underestimated. His effort to run Old Persian to a short head in a Group 2 is a solid credential to take back into the battlefield.
SUAVE RICHARD had some real estate to find with Rey De Oro from Nakayama but as that was his first run of the year he could improve and he has Moreira in the irons.
