WINNING FORM Quick Comment:
Brilliant colt, loves this track but acid test with big mass.

MAGIC TIPS Comments:

  • The brilliant son of Dynasty has continued has great work since his excellent 3rd in this contest last year.
  • He reeled off a trio of Grade 1 victories in his next six starts, including wins in the prestigious Queen’s Plate and J&B Met in Cape Town.
  • In a surprise turn of events, he joined the Snaith yard after the Met win and had two fair but sub-standard performances against lesser.
  • However he clearly needed both comeback runs and will be spot-on.
  • He has all the class and though deservedly conceding chunks of weight, he has a tough task.

2) WYLIE HALL (AUS) – 6/1

Trainer: Weiho Marwhing
Jockey: Bernard Fayd’Herb
Age / Sex: 5yo / Horse
Merit Rating: 116
Colours: Blue, gold sash, blue cap

Vodacom Durban July Draw: 2
Weight Carrying: 58kg

Total Runs: 20
First Place: 6
Seconds: 3
Thirds: 3

Runs at Greyville: 4 (1 second finish)
Runs at 2200m Distance: 2 (VDJ 2014 – finished 2nd – demoted from 1st)

Last year’s demoted winner, good form but fitness will be tested.

MAGIC TIPS Comments:

  • Last year’s demoted winner has sparingly raced since but was super-impressive in back-to-back Highveld wins, the latest over MAJMU (1.5kgs worse off) in a Grade 1 over ten furlongs (2000m).
  • His conditioner has followed the same prep with the entire’ returning from a ten week absence.
  • He is now 6.5kgs better off with FUTURA on last year’s run and whilst the latter has improved since, the Australian import has been prepared to make amends.
  • He may not have the run of the race this time but still deserves lots of respect from his 2 draw.

3) ICE MACHINE – 40/1

Trainer: Charles Laird
Jockey: Donovan Dillon
Age / Sex: 6yo / Gelding
Merit Rating: 113
Colours: Red, yellow diamonds, yellow sleeves, red cap

Vodacom Durban July Draw: 12
Weight Carrying: 56.5kg

Total Runs: 25
First Place: 8
Seconds: 4
Thirds: 1

Runs at Greyville: 8 (2 win, 1 second, 1 third)
Runs at 2200m Distance: 0

Classy sort, uncertain to stay, likely strong pace should find him out.

MAGIC TIPS Comments:

  • This classy six-year old gelding is still loving his racing as he proved with a smashing Grade 2 victory on this track last time out.
  • He was a late withdrawal in the Gold Challenge and is a rather interesting entrant in this contest, mainly due to his stamina doubt.
  • That interrupted prep is of major concern & coupled with an inexperienced jockey, the Silvano gelding has his work cut-out for him.
  • He will prefer a sedate gallop but has recently developed a nasty tendency to jump slowly and that is another major disadvantage.
  • Very tough task

4) HOT TICKET – 55/1

Trainer: Dean Kannemeyer
Jockey: Karl Neisius
Age / Sex: 5yo / Gelding
Merit Rating: 110
Colours: White, blue diamond and sleeves, white seams, blue cap, white peak

Vodacom Durban July Draw: 9
Weight Carrying: 56kg

Total Runs: 25
First Place: 6
Seconds: 5
Thirds: 1

Runs at Greyville: 6 (1 win, 1 second)
Runs at 2200m Distance: 0

Classy stayer, will prefer the decent gallop but still plenty to do.

MAGIC TIPS Comments:

  • Another intriguing entrant as many would have loved to see him defend his title in the 3000m Gold Vase to be run earlier on in the day.
  • The top class stayer ran below his rating when beaten close up in a blanket finish in the KZN Derby over 2400m exactly 2 weeks ago and that is hardly the form that will make him competitive in this field.
  • Whilst his conditioner and pilot know exactly how to get them to win this contest, this five year old Silvano gelding prefers a solid gallop
  • Has an extremely difficult task to even make the frame.
