Magic Tips Best Bets

Jockey: Richard FOURIE – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

It’s back to the grass track and a very competitive opening leg of the pick six awaits. The Snaith yard, as always, is well represented and stable jockey Richard Fourie’s ride, PRESIDENT OF POP gets the vote to make a winning comeback. The gutsy son of Captain Al is often in the mix and has won up to seven furlongs. He has a decent turn of foot so his wide draw isn’t an issue and his trainer will have him fit and ready, despite his 27 week absence. He has run well on this track before.

Race 5: SHOW TIME(4)
Jockey: Francois HERHOLDT – Trainer: Steven V/RENSBURG

This is an interesting contest and despite it being a small field of 8, there should be no shortage of a decent pace. SHOW TIME has been soundly beaten by DAFFODIL DAY in her last three starts but things could change this time around. However, the lightly raced daughter of Tiger Dance is better than her last two starts. She clearly didn’t enjoy Arlington’s short straight last time and may have still needed her penultimate start. A true reflection of her form was apparent when she ran on nicely late for third behind Stormy Coast in a feature over this c & d on her comeback run, three starts ago. Interestingly, she finished 3.50 lengths behind the latter on that specific occasion but she is now a whopping 7.5kgs better off. There isn’t any doubt that today’s c & d suits her best and she could have lots of improvement to come.

Race 7: ASPEN ANGLE(1)
Jockey: Andrew NIENABER – Trainer: Tara LAING

ASPEN ANGLE is a gutsy sprinter who is best racing down the straight. She is often in the mix but prefers six furlongs. She stayed on well for a close fourth behind INTIMATE TOUCH over the minimum trip last time but the extra furlong suits her better and she can easily reverse the form with the latter who has gone up three pounds for that last victory.

Jockey: Juan-Paul v.d.MERWE – Trainer: Dorrie SHAM

DARK REIGN is many lengths better than his two local starts suggest and the switch to this longer run-in could spell a serious return to form. The new recruit to the Sham yard stays all day but clear- ly prefers a galloping track and his conditioner has very cleverly equipped the son of Western Winter with blinkers for the first time. That will negate the drop in trip and he should bounce back to his level best and will take a power of beating.

Race 8: TRIBUTARY(5) (Each Way)
Jockey: Wayne AGRELLA – Trainer: Yvette BREMNER

This is a very moderate fillies and mares contest but there could be some real value to be had about, TRIBUTARY. This daughter of Stronghold showed decent improvement when just out of the money in a novice event over this trip, last Friday at Arlington and she is much better treated on today’s handicap terms. Interestingly, she has run well for Agrella before and it seems that she is most effective down the straight.
