Group 1

The traditional highlight of the week is dominated by three-year-olds with the rampant John Gosden stable looking for yet another Group 1 triumph with TOO DARN HOT.

Last season’s champion juvenile colt is trading at a shade of odds against with Hollywoodbets going 6-5 as under Frankie Dettori he tries to follow-up his convincing success over Space Blues over the shorter seven furlong trip at Deauville.

His overall profile this season contains three defeats – in the Dante Stakes at York,  the Irish version of the 2,000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot where he was beaten fair and square by one of today’s rivals, CIRCUS MAXIMUS.

So his place at the head of the betting market is based on that confidence-boosting success in France turning into an entity that can elevate him past his Aidan O’Brien-based foe.

O’Brien has experimented with Circus Maximus on the distance ladder and included the colt in his team for the Investec Derby, in which he clearly failed to stay in finishing sixth to stablemate Anthony Van Dyck.

But at Ascot there was much to like about the way he buckled down after being headed inside the final furlong to beat King Of Comedy a neck.

PHOENIX OF SPAIN ruffled plenty of Coolmore feathers when storming home in the Irish Guineas at the Curragh only to come home three and threequarter lengths adrift of Circus Maximus at Ascot. On that evidence he has plenty to find with the winner as well as Too Darn Hot.
The main strength from the older horse contingent emanates from LORD GLITTERS and I CAN FLY.

Lord Glitters flopped in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury but put that reverse behind him with a clear cut triumph in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot where he held the ill-fated Beat The Bank by a neck. David O’Meara has afforded Lord Glitters a nice break so that he comes here as fresh as paint.

I Can Fly has regularly placed at the top level and as the only filly in the eight-strong field comes into the reckoning after her three lengths third to Veracious in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket. But while her profile oozes consistency, she appeals more as a place option than a contender with winning aspiration.

ACCIDENTAL AGENT has work to do to after refusing to race in the Queen Anne and finishing only fourth behind Beat The Bank in the Ascot Summer Mile, while ZABEEL PRINCE and HAPPY POWER also look to be biting off more than they can chew.

Day 2 Undercard – Best Bets

(Each Way)
Race 2 – No 7 SEVERANCE
Trainer: Mick Channon
Jockey: Callum Shepherd

The hooded front runner SEVERANCE got the better of his jockey in the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket when galloping a distance clear and emptying the tank so that he was exhausted with nothing left at the finish. If Shepherd can get the colt anchored and preserve his energy, the combination might be hard to catch over this shorter trip. They have a perfect draw from which to attain the lead in this return to handicapping.

Race 3 – No 13 LIBERTY BEACH
Trainer: John Quinn
Jockey: Jason Hart

LIBERTY BEACH will be a warm order for this Molecomb Stakes and brings an impressive profile to the table, her only defeat in four starts being when she finished a creditable fourth in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. She receives 6lb from unbeaten American Challenger Maven and will be hard to stop as she’s delighted connections since her latest win at Sandown.

(Each Way)
Race 7 – No 16 LYNDON B
Trainer: George Scott
Jockey: Frankie Dettori

The jockey booking tells you all you need to know about LYNDON B whose confidence is on a high after a decisive first career success at Leicester where he beat Silkstone two lengths. The combination have the perfect draw four off the rail from which to gain a handy position, and in a handicap with four places have a bright chance of earning.
