Winning Form Best Bets
Race 1: PROMISING(6)
Race 5: APPROACH ME(2)
Race 6: VENTURA(7)
Race 8: NIGHT LOCK(9)
Race 1: PULA(10)
Jockey: Brandon LERENA – Trainer: Gavin VAN ZYL
PULA has shown useful form and has improved with each of her three starts. She showed plenty of speed and tried hard before going down three parts of a length over six furlongs at Scottsville, two weeks ago. The daughter of Kildonan is out of a Silvano mare and should love today’s extra furlong. She jumps from a handy 2 draw on her debut around the turn and she should continue to make decent improvement.
Race 2: CAPTAIN’S CRONIC(3) – TOP BET
Jockey: Anton MARCUS – Trainer: Dennis DRIER
The Drier inmate, CAPTAIN’S CHRONICLE has only raced three times but he has already proven costly to follow. However, he has shown useful form and has displayed decent speed in his last two starts. His conditioner was was left with little option but to geld the extremely well-related son of Captain Al during his ten week break and there should be tons of improvement to come. He drops to the minimum trip but races fresh and quite significantly Anton Marcus takes the ride. The gelding has the experience of racing around the turn and should be given another chance.
Race 6: ROYAL DENISE(3)
Jockey: Brandon LERENA – Trainer: Tony RIVALLAND
The pace may not be too hot in this low-key fillies and mares handicap as well, but the frontrunning ROYAL DENISE is selected to use that to her advantage. The four-year old Australian import has improv- ed since the blinkers have been removed. She ran way above her ratings when she was pegged back late over this trip in a novice contest over a mile at Scottsville last time. She is extremely well in at the weights on her handicap debut tonight and has previously placed on this course. She has plenty going for her and she can go one better here.
Race 7: GOLD ONYX(1)
The veteran GOLD ONYX is still loving his racing and he produced his customary strong late burst in his seasonal opener over a mile at Clairwood, three weeks ago. He did finish runner-up but was rightly handed the contest in the boardroom after suffering major interference at a crucial stage. More impor- tantly though, that run would have brought him on nicely for the season. The son of Black Minnaloushe had a satisfactory winter campaign in KZN last season. He has always shown an affection for this track and has won twice over this c & d. He concedes chunks of weight but is the class horse here and could still be very competitive on his favourite track.
VALUE BET FOR TODAY:
Race 4: LEGEND DANCER(5) (Each Way)
Jockey: Stuart RANDOLPH – Trainer: Michael ROBERTS
LEGEND DANCER is a lightly raced five-year old with issues but has loads of ability and that was apparent after he trounced his maiden rivals over 1300m on this course, second time out. He clearly needed his next start after a long absence but he improved nicely with a strong finish for third over six furlongs, last time out. Unfortunately, he has been rested 15 weeks since but very importantly Randolph retains the ride on the son of Black Minnaloushe. He should easily handle the slight rise in class and should be very competitive from pole position, despite his hefty nine pound penalty.
