Its My Turn - Jockey Silks

Race 7: IT’S MY TURN(8)
Jockey: Piere STRYDOM – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

There isn’t a natural pacesetter in the country’s most prestigious event which means tactics should come heavily into play and enter the ‘master tactician’ Piere Strydom who climbs aboard last year’s 4th placed entrant IT’S MY TURN. It is slightly worrying that the four-year old hasn’t registered a victory this campaign but his comeback run after an indifferent Met performance was most encouraging. The Dynasty gelding stayed on well for 3rd behind KZN hopeful TEN GUN SALUTE (2kgs worse off) in a Grade 2 in May and he will strip much fitter today. His wide draw isn’t the worst thing as he has gate speed and stays extremely well which are obvious benefits to ‘Striker’. BLACK ARTHUR has had a fair prep but can raise his game on his peak showing. The three-year-old EDICT OF NANTES is top class and proved that when winning his last start despite being underprepared.

Race 8: HORSE GUARDS(11)
Jockey: Sean VEALE – Trainer: Dennis DRIER

HORSE GUARDS(11)

HORSE GUARDS has shown encouraging signs on his return to his home province and he stayed on for a creditable 4th in a strong line-up on the grass three weeks ago. The Drier inmate will be cherry-ripe this evening and of course he cruised to his debut win in his only track & trip showing. The chestnut jumps from the best draw & has just 52.5kgs on his back.

Race 9: PRINCE OF KAHAL(5)
Jockey: Gavin LERENA – Trainer: Roy MAGNER

PRINCE OF KAHAL(5)

Veteran Highveld conditioner Roy Magner is enjoying a purple patch and that was evident when his juvenile charge PRINCE OF KAHAL ran on well to defeat hard-knocking older campaigners on his handicap debut over 1450m a fortnight ago. The well-bred chestnut colt is one of three two-time winners in this field and he clearly has plenty more to offer, particularly against his own age group. Top jockey Gavin Lerena partners the fast improving son of Kahal.

TOP BET
Race 10: BELA-BELA(1)
Jockey: Anthony DELPECH – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

BELA-BELA(1)

This is a most intriguing renewal of the day’s only other Grade 1 contest as many of the entrants race under lights for the first time in their respective careers. However, that isn’t the case for the brilliant grey filly BELA-BELA who achieved her Fillies Guineas triumph at night just over a year ago. The daughter of Dynasty has come a long way since, including capturing two Grade 1 events and she caught the eye with a strong finish for 3rd in the recent Rising Sun Gold Challenge over this c & d. She is back facing her own sex this evening and is the one to beat.

Race 12: SECRET CAPTAIN(13)

Jockey: Keagan DE MELO – Trainer: Duncan HOWELLS

SECRET CAPTAIN(13)

The three-year olds could have a massive say in the day’s final event and the frustrating grey colt SECRET CAPTAIN is expected to show his true worth with just 52kgs on his back. He clearly didn’t enjoy blinkers in his recent flop or was suited by the sedate gallop on the polytrack prior to that. However he showed his class when gaining on the quality miler Janoobi over this c & d in the Guineas prior to that. The inmate from the in-form Howells camp can bounce right back to form tonight.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY

Race 4: SERISSA(4)

Jockey: S’manga KHUMALO – Trainer: Sean TARRY

SERISSA(4)

It could pay to watch the quickness of the track as the game frontrunner SERISSA looks set to enjoy a soft lead in this marathon Grade 3 contest. He tried hard when finishing three parts of a length adrift of CAPTAIN SPLENDID over a mile and a half in a similar feature event early last month. The pair meet on alike terms now but the top rating could prove more effective over this extended trip. Of course he only tired late in the two mile Gold Cup in his only effort beyond today’s distance.
