TOP BET

Race 1: NAUTICUS(7)
Jockey: Sean VEALE – Trainer: Dennis DRIER

The Dennis Drier yard saddles just the solitary entrant, NAUTICUS, on this card. The bay colt was backed when little went his way on his fair debut over five furlongs on the grass at Scottsville, three weeks ago. He weakened late after racing green but would have come on with that experience and should make natural improvement. The son of Gimmethegreenlight is well drawn on his track debut and he is obviously rated by his conditioner.

Race 2: SWISS NOTE(2)

Jockey: Muzi YENI – Trainer: Chris ERASMUS

SWISS NOTE is a track specialist who just failed to win a similar event over this c & d in her penultimate start. She finished narrowly ahead of QUEEN’S CREST that day and has strong claims of going one better from another decent barrier position. The latter was returning from a lengthy absence when she posted her career-best effort on the last day of August. She has the nasty tendency to jump slowly but is still lightly raced and has room for improvement. The obvious concern is whether she has recovered from the exertions of that comeback run.

Race 7: SON OF SILVER(4)
Jockey: Brandon LERENA – Trainer: Frank ROBINSON

This is another very competitive handicap featuring many form runners who should ensure an exciting finish. The grey gelding SON OF SILVER is progressive though and he should take a power of beating, if he repeats his last run on this surface, three months ago. The son of Mogok was poorly drawn in a quality seven-furlong field that day but he produced a powerful late burst and only failed narrowly by a head at the line. Of course, he escaped without a penalty for that middle stakes effort and is thus very well handicapped here. The Frank Robinson inmate races fresh and he should again be finishing strongly.

Race 8: TEXAS COWBOY(3)

Jockey: Serino MOODLEY – Trainer: Tony RIVALLAND

TEXAS COWBOY was well supported when he produced a much improved last run over this c & d under today’s 4kgs claiming apprentice. The five-year-old bay gelding showed good speed and he fought on doggedly when beaten a short head into 2nd at the line. He finished almost two lengths ahead of the next placed runner and now has his peak showing. The son of Casey Tibbs was penalized three pounds for his effort but he meets lesser rivals and can go one better.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:

Race 4: AT LONG LAST(6)
Jockey: Keagan DE MELO – Trainer: Willem A NEL

This is an extremely competitive low-key handicap that may be run at a false pace and the frontrunner could benefit greatly. The four-year-old gelding AT LONG LAST has improved smartly with each start and he showed his ability when dictating terms to great effect in the maiden ranks over this c & d, seven weeks ago. The gelding has certainly done the trick for the son of Visionaire who does seem rather lowly rated on his handicap debut. He is well drawn on his peak showing and could be a handful if allowed to set his own tempo.
