DESERT MIRACLE from the Mike de Kock stable is one of the better bets on today’s card. She was ultra- impressive when winning a minor feature race over this distance at Turffontein, four weeks ago. She raced from a handy position that day and won with a ton in hand. The daughter of Dynasty looks to have class about her and if suited to the track, she should take a power of beating.

The long awaited match between two of South Africa’s best fillies, WAR OF ATHENA and CAPTAIN’S RANSOM has finally arrived. The preference is for the Triple Tiara winner, WAR OF ATHENA. She showed her class when winning the Grade 1 Woolavington 2000 last time. Her turn of foot in that contest was eye- catching and she drew away from the opposition with ease. She has won twice and finished second once from as many starts over this distance. She has the advantage of pole position and should notch up her tenth career victory.

CAPOEIRA should be the horse to close off the meeting. He showed good signs of a form return in the Grade 3 Cup Trial last time. The manner in which he ran on at the finish was encouraging. He has won once, finished second twice and third once from six starts over this distance. He is having his second run after a rest today and should strip much fitter. From his good draw of four, he should take a power of beating.

WATERBERRY LANE has followed up his maiden victory with two good third-place finishes. He was settled near the rear of the field in the Listed Gatecrasher Stakes last time and the manner in which he finished off his race was eye-catching. He is having his peak run this afternoon and should be cherry- ripe. The son of Soft Falling Rain gets stable jockey Keagan de Melo back in the saddle and he may be the one to side with.
