Race 7

A full field of twenty-four runners faces the starter for “the race that
stops a nation”. SIR DRAGONET has his second run in Australia after winning the
Cox Plate last time out over ten furlongs. That race has proved to be am
reliable guide to the Melbourne Cup over the last fifteen years. He started
favourite in last years Derby and will be partnered by Glen Boss, who will be
looking for his fourth victory in this race. TIGER MOTH is trained by Aidan
O’Brien and brings solid Northern Hemisphere credentials into the race. He
finished second in this years Irish Derby and appears to have targeted this
race. He will have to overcome a wide draw twenty-three, but will have Kerrin
McEvoy in the irons, so will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle. RUSSIAN
CAMELOT
jumped into contention after his win in
the South Australian Derby over 2500M. He was beaten into third place by the
top choice last time out in this year’s Cox Plate, but he finished strongly
that day and the step up in trip should be to his liking.ANTHONY VAN DYCKwon the Derby this
year and attracted plenty of betting support last time out in his first
Australian run in the Caulfield Cup over twelve furlongs. He finished strongly
to end up in second place that day, just a head behind the winner. On that
effort he should have no issue with going the extra ground which he tries for
the first time. He carries top weight of 58.5kgs, but on the plus side, he will
be partnered by Hugh Bowman and has a handy gate three. VERRY ELLEEGANT is a 5yr old mare taking on the boys, but she has won
six Group 1 races, including the Caulfield Cup in her latest outing. She faces
a wide draw fifteen, but she should give the males a good run for their money.

Race 8.

PURPLE SECTOR had his consistency rewarded when he put three lengths between himself and the opposition to win last time out over a mile. He hit the front at the 250M mark and then strode away for a comfortable victory. On that effort, he should have no issue with going the extra distance of today’s contest. From draw eight, he is taken to be the best bet on the day’s card. HOMESMAN went from jump to wire when showing marked improvement to win his last start over a mile by two lengths. He was returning from a 29 week break that day and has a far kinder draw four, so could emerge as the biggest danger to the top choice. JUNIPAL had to be steadied at the 400M mark before staying on to finish ninth over a mile, 4.6L back from the winner. That was his hat-trick attempt and jumping from gate six, he will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways here.

Race 9

WILD VIXEN has won two of her last three outings, the latest over six furlongs by a neck, when returning from a 21 week break. She was making good late progress in the race so should have little problem dealing with draw seven and is made the value in the contest. CORDILLA is seldom far off the action and won her last start over seven furlongs by just under a length, despite hanging in the latter stages. She will have to negotiate gate nine, but she should be right up there when they hit the line. LYRE only got going very late when finishing sixth last time out over six furlongs, 6.2L behind the winner. She seems likely to appreciate the extra ground on offer here.

Race 10
This
looks to be a tricky race to end off the Jackpot and some caution is suggested.
The tentative first pick goes to ONE MORE JACK who wonunextendedby nearly two and a half lengths last time
out over six furlongs. He has a wideish draw eight but could be the one that
they all have to beat.REDOUBLE showed solid improvement when a
head second in his last outing over six furlongs when returning from a 17-week
break. From draw five, he should threaten the former. WILLIAM THOMAS finished
strongly to end up in third spot last time out over six furlongs, just under
two lengths behind the victor. He faces gate fifteen, but is likely to be
dropped out of it early and should be picking off the frontrunner over the
closing stages. YAO DASH
 disappointed when finishing sixth
last time out over seven furlongs and was immediately rested for 29 weeks. He returns
here having won his two barrier trials to showcase his well-being and, jumping
from gate four, the gelding should be included in all bets.
