Winning Form Best Bets
Race 1: STRIDE OUT(2)
Race 2: DAS BESTE(5)
Race 4: VIA AFRICA(1)
Race 8: KISANGANI(4)
Race 2: GOLDEN CRYSTAL(1)
Jockey: Karl NEISIUS – Trainer: Mike BASS
Only a small field of seven runners go to post in this contest and there could be a real lack of pace. However, GOLDEN CRYSTAL has a decent turn of speed and he has plenty of hope, especially if he doesn’t dislodge his jockey like he did last time out. The Goldkeeper gelding didn’t stay 2400m in his penult- imate outing but ran on well to easily win over this trip at Durbanville, prior to that. He meets a few of those rivals on unfavourable weight terms but still has plenty of scope for improvement and he should give a very good account of himself.
Race 4: VIA AFRICA(1)
Jockey: Piere STRYDOM – Trainer: Duncan HOWELLS
This is an exciting sprint contest that features many top sprinters and despite the fact that most of them won’t be fully tuned-up, it could still turn into a great spectacle. The KZN visitor VIA AFRICA had a brilliant three-year old campaign during which she only suffered two narrow defeats to champion sprinter, What A Winter. However, she enjoyed her moment in the sun as she easily beat her Grade 1 field over the Scottsville 1200m in her penultimate outing. The top class daughter of Var then coasted to victory on her seasonal debut at Clairwood over this trip last time. She was successful over this c & d last season and looks set for another brilliant term. Despite top weight, she is well treated on official ratings and is again the one to beat. However, she meets the highly rated SCHIFFER from the Drier yard and concedes 7kgs to the latter. Of course, the latter beat the top rating on their respec- tive debuts over the Clairwood five furlongs. She had two cracking runs after that but suffered a set- back and was rested for almost one year. She is also by Var and she won her comeback run in early September but still needs to prove that she is back to her level best. She is unbeaten over this trip.
Race 5: SKABENGA(5) – TOP BET
Jockey: Richard HUGHES – Trainer: Glen PULLER
There are some very speedy sorts here and the likely cracking pace will suit SKABENGA right down to the ground. This son of Dynasty has ironically shown his best form over the minimum trip and he was pipped by the unbeaten and highly regarded Daring Dave over this c & d in only his 2nd career outing. He kept his form in subsequent efforts over 1200m and 1400m, respectively, but today’s drop to five furlongs could prove ideal. The form of his last start was franked by the runner-up and this colt should take some beating. He gets Richard Hughes in the irons.
Race 8: ON THE NOD(2)
Jockey: Tom QUEALLY – Trainer: Dean KANNEMEYER
ON THE NOD clearly needed his seasonal opener over this c & d in a strong line-up, ten days ago. He had excuses and never really got into that contest but that run would have brought him on nicely. His conditioner is obviously pleased with his progress since and the son of Atso is very well treated on today’s weight terms. He took just three runs to win his maiden and then showed that he is above average when he ran on strongly for a close third at Greyville over 1300m on July day. He should go really well here and visiting UK jockey, Tom Queally gets the ride.
VALUE BET FOR TODAY:
Race 9: HURRICANE WIND(9) (Each Way)
Jockey: Jamie SPENCER – Trainer: Mike ROBINSON
HURRICANE WIND wasn’t given the greatest of rides last time and she could make amends today. She show- ed what she is capable of when she ran on strongly to win her maiden going away over six furlongs at Durbanville in her penultimate outing and has lots of room for improvement. The daughter of Western Winter gets a stronger jockey up today and she should be very competitive from pole position. That said, there are some hard knocking older campaigners here that will make things tough for the top rating.
