Race 2: SHAMSIYA(15)

Magic Tips Best Bets

Jockey: Juan-Paul v.d.MERWE – Trainer: Glen KOTZEN

Only 3 of the 11 juveniles have had the benefit of racing, so the betting market must be closely monitored. However, experience could still be key and CRIME OF PASSION showed plenty of speed before she was outrun late into second on her debut over 800m, two weeks ago. She found strong betting support on that occasion so is obviously showing decent work back home and she should make natural improvement. The extra furlong should pose no issues for the daughter of Judpot and she has loads of scope.

Jockey: Glen HATT – Trainer: Brett CRAWFORD

SPEEDY CHESTNUT made the expected improvement second time out. The daughter of Horse Chestnut overcame a very poor draw and set the pace over this c & d on that occasion. She tired over the final furlong but was only beaten just over three lengths and has definite scope for more improvement. The Crawford inmate jumps from barrier 2 today and should be very competitive in this field.

Jockey: Kevin SHEA – Trainer: Paul REEVES

TIGER TIGER has always shown promise and his last outing proved his worth. The Tiger Dance gelding was slow into stride but he displayed his smart turn of foot to win a very good race over this c & d in yielding conditions. He clearly enjoyed being handled by Shea who retains the ride for the Paul Reeves stable. The gelding takes on some decent three-year olds but is well-weighted and should give another very good account of himself.

Jockey: Glen HATT – Trainer: Brett CRAWFORD

As is the norm, this event attracts an excellent crop of three-year olds from around the country but even those high standards have been surpassed by today’s quality of runners. It all points to a cliff- hanger and the Brett Crawford yard could emerge victorious with their star colt, CAPTAIN AMERICA. This son of Captain Al has only been beaten once in his 5 starts and that was on debut over six furlongs. He was beaten just over two lengths that day after being slow into stride but he has been exceptional since. He pulverised his older rivals with a big mass to win his penultimate outing over this c & d and then really proved his worth last time. He raced over a distance short of his best but still collared the equally top class RED RAY in the final furlong to win going away over seven furlongs. The extra furlong heavily favours Glen Hatt’s mount and there is little to suggest that the latter can reverse the form. The top rating faces his biggest test to date but he is truly special and should take some beating.

Race 8: BIG CITY ANGEL(11) (Each Way)
Jockey: Anthony DELPECH – Trainer: Gavin VAN ZYL

The betting market might suggest otherwise but this contest is by no means cut-and-dried. The six-year old Bezrin gelding, BIG CITY ANGEL has always been held in high regard but he is plagued with issues and is relatively lightly raced. He has proven that he isn’t far off the country’s best runners and is a model of consistency. He stayed on for a close third behind the star mare Beach Beauty on his local debut over seven furlongs in his penultimate outing. Then, the gelding made eye-catching late progress to finish a creditable sixth in a Grade 2 over this c & d, four weeks ago. He would have still needed that outing and finished just over three lengths behind the runner-up KING OF PAIN. However, he meets the latter on a whopping 7kgs weight reversal and has his third run after the rest. He is possibly best over an extra furlong but his conditioner has cleverly equipped the gelding with blinkers. Delpech knows him well and he clearly represents the value in this event.
