Jockey: Richard FOURIE – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

GREYS INN CONTROL has always been highly regarded by his conditioner but after a slightly below-par penultimate effort, the son of Greys Inn was given the unkindest cut of all. The gelding seemed to have done the trick as he cruised to victory on his comeback run over seven furlongs from a poor draw at Fairview, albeit in a moderate contest. Still, that outing would have brought him on nicely and he would have improved since his subsequent four week break. The four-year old has shown some promising form and appears ready to rise in class today. He will love every bit of today’s extra furlong on this longer run-in and should be extremely competitive, despite taking on stronger.

Race 7: SCHIFFER(4)
Jockey: Sean CORMACK – Trainer: Dennis DRIER

This is a great supporting feature to the Grade 1 Fillies Guineas and it showcases some of the country’s top sprinters. SCHIFFER has her issues but she has won 3 of her 4 career starts and more importantly is unbeaten over this minimum trip. The top class daughter of Var beat the brilliant VIA AFRICA on their respective debuts over this trip at Clairwood in June last year. Of course, the latter has gone on to great things since but the top rating was given a lengthy absence after she sustained a serious injury. Her comeback run proved her well-being though, albeit against an ordinary field. She was withdrawn when carded to race in the mud on this course against many of today’s rivals three weeks ago due to a foot abscess but that may have been a blessing in disguise. Her prep may have been hinde- red but she is that good and could display just that today.

Jockey: Richard FOURIE – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

More than half of this field is represented by the IN THE FAST LANE formline of the Fillies Champions- hip run over seven furlongs, four weeks ago. The daughter of Jet Master is top class and despite the trip being slightly on the sharp side for her, she produced a powerful finish to get the better of her stablemate, HIGHLY DECORATED by a neck, going away. It comes as little surprise that the stable jockey has now opted for the top rating as today’s extra furlong will suit her even better. Also, the switch to the summer course will make a huge difference and she is expected to go very close, albeit she is competing in Grade 1 company for the first time.

Jockey: Bernard FAYD’HERBE – Trainer: Joey RAMSDEN

CAREFUL HIKER enjoyed both the blinkers and the ten furlongs when she showed a welcome return to form, three weeks ago. The former Grade 1 placed daughter of Spectrum found her best stride late as she beat AMBER FLYER going away in that last contest. She certainly seems to have escaped with only a three pound penalty and meets the runner-up on 0.5kg better terms. The slight drop in trip won’t be a problem as she will love the long stretch of the summer course. She should be extremely competitive and could be the horse to beat.

Race 4: TEMPLE TIGER(2) (Each Way)
Jockey: Karl NEISIUS – Trainer: Riaan VAN REENEN

This could be a great tactical contest and the Van Reenen yard may have a shrewd plan for their two runners, TEMPLE TIGER and HOLD ON TIGER and with Karl Neisius retaining the ride on the former, the son of Tiger Dance could be the stable elect. The horse to beat has to be the likely short-priced favourite, GLOBAL EXPRESS but he shoulders a hefty mass of 60kgs and I am expecting HOLD ON TIGER to set a cracking gallop for his stablemate, thereby making the top weight carry all of his hefty burden. Neisius’ mount is now 4kgs better off with the top weight but was beaten seven lengths over 2400m in that last event and that may still not be enough to reverse the form. However, the tactics could bring the top rating into play and the veteran jockey shouldn’t be too far off his pacesetting stablemate and will be first to pounce in the home straight. Of course, the Van Reenen runners can afford to execute this plan as they both belong to the same owner.
