Top Bet
Race 2: ROCK OF AFRICA(1)
Jockey: Lucian AFRICA – Trainer: Vaughan MARSHALL

ROCK OF AFRICA is rated by his conditioner and his last two starts in KZN proved why he made the trip up for winter. The son of Seventh Rock was beaten into 2nd by two classy types, particularly the latter one Africa Rising who then went on to place in a Grade 1 event. The Vaughan Marshall inmate makes his hometown and seasonal debut and he is sure to have come on with racing experience. He could prove tough to beat, if handling the conditions.

Race 3: EDICT OF NANTES(2)
Jockey: Corne ORFFER – Trainer: Brett CRAWFORD

This is a competitive maiden contest which should yield an exciting finish and the formline to follow could be the Illdrinktothat run on 30/07. EDICT OF NANTES went off as favourite in that event but was slow into stride and hopelessly green. He only got going very late but caught the eye at the finish when beaten just under two lengths over the seven furlongs. He gave every indication that the mile will be right up his alley and that formline was boosted when the 3rd placed finisher Gimme Green landed a betting coup, a mere three days later. This son of Count Dubois has a midfield draw and he should continue to progress.

Race 7: KIRUMBO(4)
Jockey: Grant VAN NIEKERK – Trainer: Adam MARCUS

There could be a major lack of pace in this seven-horse contest but that will suit the top selection KIRUMBO down to the ground. The six-year-old gelding has decent credentials, particularly over this c & d and he is capable with handy or frontrunning tactics. He runs well for this top jockey and the bay gelding is now 2.5kgs better off at the weights with his recent conqueror SOLAR NIGHT for a three parts of a length defeat over 1300m in yielding conditions at Durbanville.

Race 8: MR JAY(7)
Jockey: Andrew FORTUNE – Trainer: Vaughan MARSHALL

MR JAY has done extremely well at this level since returning from a long break and he could take all the beating in this low-key handicap. He ran on smartly for 3rd over this c & d in yielding going last time and it could pay to follow the progress of the runner-up, his stablemate Half Moon Hotel who contests the prior event. This son of Jay Peg faces much weaker opposition and he gets the services of top veteran jockey Andrew Fortune.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:

Race 5: GIFT OF RAIN(6)
Jockey: Richard FOURIE – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

GIFT OF RAIN was unfavourably weighted and plainly outclassed in a graded feature last time but her impressive penultimate victory over ME MYSELF AND I underlined her ability at this level. She is now worse off at the weights with a few rivals but is suited by this extra furlong and the daughter of Galileo loves the soft underfoot conditions. She is well drawn at gate 3.
