Race 2: MARMALADY(3)
Jockey: Andrew FORTUNE – Trainer: Joey RAMSDEN

MARMALADY had promising form prior to her eleven week layoff. She handled the mile well when she stay- ed on for third behind Irish Myth at Durbanville last time and would have strengthened during the layoff. The Ramsden inmate jumps from barrier 3 and she rates as the horse to beat.

Jockey: Craig DU PLOOY – Trainer: Billy PRESTAGE

SIMONSBERG has shown good ability and he ran on nicely for third behind a quality sort over this c & d in yielding conditions, three weeks ago. He drops slightly in class today and despite top weight of 60kgs, he should go very close to winning.

Race 7: VIVA LA VAR(2)
Jockey: Sean CORMACK – Trainer: Dennis DRIER

The Drier inmate VIVA LA VAR has a big reputation and it wasn’t surprising to see the son of Var start deep in the red on his debut over this trip at Clairwood on the last day of March. He showed plenty of pace but was still very green and only just held on to beat subsequent winners Fire The Rocket and Aurum Pot. He seems to have suffered a setback since and hasn’t raced for 36 weeks. However, he was gelded during that time and now makes his seasonal debut in the Cape. He takes a steep rise in class but has huge scope for improvement and his conditioner is a master of bringing his runners back from big absences.

Race 9: DINESEN(1) – TOP BET
Jockey: Karl NEISIUS – Trainer: Dean KANNEMEYER

DINESEN has come back well since her 15 week layoff. She was having her third run after the break last time and she challenged strongly before finishing runner-up, beaten just under half a length at the wire. She is again drawn wider out but has strong claims of going one better.

Race 3: PRIVATE DOOWALEY(1) (Each Way)

Jockey: Jason SMITSDORFF – Trainer: Alan HIGGINS

This is an intriguing contest and the engaging of a 2.5kgs claiming apprentice on PRIVATE DOOWALEY could make all the difference. The Doowaley gelding was never dangerous when he was well beaten into 5th behind Desert Swirl over 2400m on this course last time but may have still just needed that run. He has campaigned with success against some useful stayers and now meets the runner-up of his last start, OH SCHUCKS on 3.5kgs better terms for a 3.35 length beating. That clearly brings him into the equation and he represents value in this contest.
