AINTREE

Race 1 No2 BOOTLEGGER (Each Way)
Trainer: Tristan Davidson – Jockey: Kevin Brogan

BOOTLEGGER ran like a horse in need of the race when finishing third on his return from a break at Wetherby. On a first hurdles start in almost a year, he travelled best before getting tired approaching the final flight. Granted that he will now be fitter, he can put in an earning run in this competitive opener.

Race 2 No2 BLACK OP (Nap)
Trainer: Tom George – Jockey: Tom Scudamore

It’s almost two years since BLACK OP last visited the winner’s enclosure, but this classy individual has run several big races in defeat including when seventh in last season’s Gold Cup, where he looked set to get into the money coming down the hill, only for his stamina to fall short. A former top class novice over hurdles who took out a Grade 1 at this course, he is ready for this return to the fray and should deliver.

Race 3 No6 MIDNIGHT SHADOW (Each Way)
Trainer: Sue Smith – Jockey: Ryan Mania

Eight-year-old MIDNIGHT SHADOW is carded to start the outsider in the features Old Roan Chase, but can belie his odds by taking home a cheque in the Grade 2 contest. Restricted to only three starts last season, he needs respecting on the pick of his form as a novice, when landing a Grade 2 at Cheltenham and finishing second in a Sandown Grade 1. Although having it to do with Nuts Well on the book, he must not be underestimated.

Race 4 No10 PICANHA (Each Way)
Trainer: Richard Phillips – Jockey: Daniel Hiskett

Before going onto the injury list PICANHA looked like he was going places, winning a 16-runner Exeter bumper in taking fashion. The Malinas gelding is highly regarded by his trainer, and although taking on a number of promising types on a first outing in almost two years, can get into the mix.

WINCANTON

Race 1 No6 SONNING
Trainer: Alan King – Jockey: Adrian Heskin

A useful performer on the Flat, SONNING represents an outfit that excels with his type, and can score on this debut over jumps. The gelded son of The Gurkha switches codes after a select campaign in three-year-old handicaps, as this was always going to be his destiny.

Race 2 No3 JAVA POINT (Nap)
Trainer: Tom George – Jockey: Jonathan Burke

On first run for George and first over fences, JAVA POINT needs abundant respect and should oblige. He’s schooled well at home, and is ready to endorse the promise of a hurdling career that saw him only twice finish out of the frame in seven attempts.
