Neil Morrice Best Bets & Tips

Neil Morrice brings us all of his best bets and tips for Friday’s racing taking place at Goodwood, Newmarket, Hamilton Park, and Fontwell Park!

GOODWOOD

Race 1: No2 – ROMMEL (Nap)
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: Charles Bishop

This is a tight-knit nursery but ROMMEL has worked well since recovering from a minor setback and has the size and strength to see out a race likely to be run in easy conditions better than his four foes. He looked in good heart in his final breeze on the all-weather on Wednesday.

Race 6: No5 – SINGLE
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: George Bass

Bass excelled on SINGLE when the Nathaniel mare came from well off the pace to score going away at Salisbury earlier in the month. The win made up for a series of near-misses but the filly has it in her to follow-up, striding out purposefully in her last piece of fast work on grass.

Race 8: No7 – DARING GUEST
Trainer: Tom Clover – Jockey: Georgia Dobie

After seconds on both starts since the resumption of racing and with the same capable apprentice in the irons, DARING GUEST has the wherewithal to make it third time lucky in the nightcap. He did nothing wrong in those races at Windsor and Lingfield, going down in a photo at the last-named venue, and is in the mood to better those efforts.

NEWMARKET

Race 1: No11 – ZWELELA
Trainer: Richard Hannon – Jockey: Pat Dobbs

The Hannons have good chances in the juvenile races at the last fixture of the year on the July course. Enter ZWELELA, a daughter of Toronado who finished with gusto to force Deise Blue to a photo on debut at Newbury. Being out of a Sea The Stars mare she shouldn’t mind further easing in the going while looking sure to appreciate the move up to seven furlongs.

Race 2: No1 – MAGELLAN (Nap)
Trainer: John Gosden – Jockey: Martin Harley

MAGELLAN did us a good turn when powering home on his debut over a mile here. The son of Kingman faces a clutch of well-related foes with most of the major yards represented, and also carries a 7lb penalty. But such was the majesty of his dismissal of Impulsive One that he can cope with the drop to seven furlongs and remain unbeaten.

Race 7: No2 – ALPINE MISTRAL
Trainer: Shaun Keightley – Jockey: Josephine Gordon

Since being fitted with cheekpieces ALPINE MISTRAL has looked a different filly and built up a fine understanding with her rider. The combination are up in the weights for a third success, gained a cosy fashion at Wolverhampton. They can complete a fine four-timer, with Gordon remaining unbeaten on the selection.

HAMILTON PARK

Race 1: No7 – SUMMER POWER (Nap)
Trainer: Tim Easterby – Jockey: Silvestre De Sousa

SUMMER POWER should enjoy the switch to grass and enjoy the prevailing heavy ground, having shown bundles of promise when second on his Wolverhampton introduction. The Pivotal colt was beaten a long way but is going to be more streetwise, getting the vote over the more experienced Mere Green.

Race 7: No6 – CONGA
Trainer: Kevin Ryan – Jockey: Tom Eaves

CONGA signalled his liking for some cut when scoring over course and distance on bottomless ground on his final outing last year. He’s come back as a slow burner, improving from race to race in three outings to chase home Edgewood here a fortnight ago. That should have brought him to the boil, with the addition of cheekpieces another reason to think he can go one better.

FONTWELL PARK

Race 4: No8 – THE PREMIER CELTIC (Each Way)
Trainer: Sean Houlihan – Jockey: Pat Phelan

Strong travelling THE PREMIER CELTIC is going to start as a roughie in this handicap hurdle but with the addition of a first-time visor can be competitive. He made a good fist of landing a pre-Christmas gamble when second to Jimmy here and went on to acquit himself well in cheekpieces in four subsequent outings. His record of one win in 18 career starts doesn’t read well but is there to be broken.

Race 8: No3 – SURF WALK (Nap)
Trainer: Nicky Henderson- Jockey: Nico de Boinville

Unless there’s something useful amongst the five newcomers, SURF WALK should take out the concluding bumper for his top connections. He finished second on debut in a big field at Lingfield in January, and though disappointing in a jumper/bumper at Wolverhampton found himself in a hotter race and was far from disgraced.
