MEYDAN SUPER SATURDAY BEST BETS

Race 2 DUBAI CITY OF GOLD (Group 2)

No6 WALTON STREET (Nap)

Trainer: Charlie Appleby – Jockey: William Buick

This is a weak renewal of a race that can be dominated by WALTON STREET, who broke the track record in a Listed handicap on the opening night of the Carnival and will be very hard to beat.

Race 5 JEBEL HATTA (Group 1)

No1 AL SUHAIL

Trainer: Charlie Appleby – Jockey: William Buick

Lord Glitters sets the standard but might not get the fast pace required to put in his trademark finishing kick, in which case AL SUHAIL is a safer option. He’s been kept back after impressively landing a Listed race at Newmarket in July and his chance is based to a large extent on some pleasing gallops at Al Quoz.

Race 6 AL MAKTOUM CHALLENGE (Group 1)

No9 SECRET AMBITION

Trainer: Salish Seemar – Jockey: Richie Mullen

Veteran SECRET AMBITION looked the real deal when landing the Firebreak last month and with Mullen appearing to favour him over Roman Rosso another huge run is anticipated.

Race 7 NAD AL SHEBA TURF SPRINT (Group 3)

No8 ROYAL CRUSADE

Trainer: Charlie Appleby – Jockey: William Buick

Sparingly campaigned last season, ROYAL CRUSADE looks another gem that Godolphin is pulling out of its treasure trove. The Shamardal colt hasn’t been seen since landing a Group 3 in France in July and has put in some solid workouts ahead of this.

NEWBURY

Race 2 No5 SIR IVAN

Trainer: Harry Fry – Jockey: Lorcan Murtagh

SIR IVAN has missed a few opportunities owing to cancellations and been all dressed up with nowhere to go. However that could end up being a blessing in disguise, as he finds himself in a chase rather than a hurdle, in which he can maximise the effect of his superb jumping.

Race 3 No7 UMBRIGADO (Nap)

Trainer: David Pipe – Jockey: David Noonan

UMBRIGADO needs to be taken very seriously in this Greatwood Gold Cup as he chases down a hat-trick over fences. The seven-year-old impressed at Wetherby and now returns to his optimum distance. He’s a horse to follow, and could yet emerge as a leading light for one of the handicap chases at Cheltenham.

DONCASTER

Race 4 No2 CANELO

Trainer: Alan King – Jockey: Thomas Bellamy

This course is going to suit CANELO who was in the money here behind Takingrisks last time. His previous triumph in the Rowland Meyrick Chase at Wetherby was gained with gritty determination and he remains a lightly-raced horse over fences that should have plenty more to offer.

Race 6 No6 KILDIMO (Nap)

Trainer: David Jeffreys – Jockey: Kielan Woods

KILDIMO looks to have outstanding claims following a few near misses. His second to Sheldon at Fakenham reads well, and with a similarly forward showing he should open his account.

KELSO

Race 1 No5 FELDSPAR (Nap)

Trainer: Keith Dalgleish – Jockey: Conor O’Farrell

FELDSPAR gets a welcome drop in grade for this juvenile hurdle after placing in a much better race on trials day at Musselburgh. His bold front running style and slick jumping should make him a hard horse to peg back.

Race 3 No7 LUCKY ONE

Trainer: Paul Nicholls – Jockey: Harry Cobden

Nicholls rates LUCKY ONE highly and the gelding can take this Grade 2 in his stride. He annihilated the useful Natural History at Wincanton, and that rival bolted up in a subsequent handicap at Plumpton. He is an exciting horse and one to follow.

Race 4 No6 TORN AND FRAYED

Trainer: Nigel Twiston-Davies – Jockey: San Twiston-Davies

TORN AND FRAYED makes a quick reappearance after a decisive Hereford success at the start of the week. That can act as a much needed confidence boost in this admittedly better race.

LINGFIELD PARK

Race 3 No8 HEY HO LET’S GO (Nap)

Trainer: Mark Hoad – Jockey: Luke Morris

If any horse competing here deserves a chance of luck it’s HEY HO LET’S GO. He’s a horse that needs to be delivered with precision timing, and has either found himself in front too soon or got there too late in his last five outings which include four runners-up prizes.

Race 8 No6 BIRD FOR LIFE

Trainer: Mark Usher – Jockey: Elinor Jones

BIRD FOR LIFE is creeping into form and should not be underestimated in the nightcap. She’s getting a handy amount of weight from multiple scorer Caribeno and can surprise that warm favourite.

SOUTHWELL

Race 6 No8 VAN DIJK (Each Way)

Trainer: Anthony Brittain – Jockey: Cam Hardie

This is a very trippy card and the newly laid Fibresand with the kickback more exaggerated than I’ve ever seen it. That’s why VAN JIJK is the only advice. He’s been a model of consistency and can turn the tables on his recent conqueror Susie Javea.
