Neil Morrice brings you all of his best bets and tips from Wednesday's racing at Bath, Musselburgh, Thirsk, Worcester, and Kempton Park.
RACE 3 No10 VELVET AND STEEL (Nap)
Trainer: Ralph Beckett – Jockey: Hector Crouch
VELVET AND STEEL has hit the crossbar with frustrating regularity, but can finally come good returned to the turf. The daughter of Union Rags should know too much about her rivals.
Race 4 No1 POWER OF DARKNESS (Each Way)
Trainer: Marcus Tregoning – Jockey: Dane O’Neill
Not without his problems, POWER OF DARKNESS is a name to conjure with as he attempts to recapture his old ability. The six-year-old hasn’t shown much in two outings this season, but has been given some respite from the handicapper, and could improve for the addition of cheekpieces.
Race 7 No9 SOMETHING LUCKY (Each Way)
Trainer: Michael Attwater – Jockey: William Carson
Everything looks in place for a good run from SOMETHING LUCKY who is bred to enjoy plenty of cuts in the ground. He’s been simmering away as a winner waiting to happen, and should again enter calculations and take home a cheque.
Race 1 No3 FIREBOMB (Nap)
Trainer: Bryan Smart – Jockey: Graham Lee
Swiss Spirit colt FIREBOMB put in an excellent effort to chase home subsequent Norfolk Stakes winner Perfect Power on second start at Hamilton, and on the strength of that form line is unquestionably the best bet on the card. His trainer could point him much higher if he delivers today.
Race 4 No6 TADREEB
Trainer: Mark Johnston – Jockey: Joe Fanning
Getting weight from all his foes, TADREEB is poised to defy a 5lb penalty for a handicap debut success at Thirsk, where he comfortably accounted for Higher Kingdom. His trainer excels with horses of his ilk.
Race 1 No10 ABBIE POWER
Trainer: Iain Jardine – Jockey: Jamie Gormley
ABBIE POWER was an unconsidered 25-1 shot when chasing home Atomic Force on debut at Hamilton last month. She is thought to have learned much from that promising introduction and is ready to go one better.
Race 2 No9 VIEUX CARRE (Nap)
Trainer: David O’Meara – Jockey: Shane Gray
Narrowly beaten on each of his last two outings, there can be no excuses for VIEUX CARRE as the Mondialiste filly aims to make it third time lucky. She ran into a tough opponent in Favourite Child at Pontefract and lost no caste in that narrow defeat. If running to that level she will be hard to stop.
Race 4 No7 FORZA ORTA
Trainer: Kevin Ryan – Jockey: Tom Eaves
FORZA ORTA drops back a tad on the distance ladder for this, after running a cracker on debut at Carlisle when beating all but Noble Crusade. The gelding should be more streetwise for this encounter with Zagato, who can follow the selection home.
Race 7 No2 KENTUCKY HARDBOOT
Trainer: Mohammed Moubarak – Jockey: Jack Quinlan
KENTUCKY HARDBOOT is a rounded performer over hurdles that have earned in novice and maiden races as well as in a handicap. He showed with his second in that category at Southwell that he’s on song for what is now a return to novice company.
Race 8 No16 HEY BOB (Nap)
Trainer: Olly Murphy – Jockey: Lewis Stones
Hold-up horse HEY BOB should be respected on debut for Olly Murphy, as he will be in his element in this big field. He rarely strays away from Sedgefield or Hexham, but on this first run at Worcester he can take home a cheque.
Race 3 No4 SEA SYLPH (Nap)
Trainer: William Haggas – Jockey: Richard Kingscote
Sea The Stars filly SEA SYLPH looks like she will relish stepping up to a mile and a half as she bids to supplement her comfortable Windsor success under a penalty. She landed some good bets at that riverside course and on only her third career start this evening will be hard to beat.
Race 4 No10 WHITLOCK
Trainer: Nicky Henderson – Jockey: Andrea Atzeni
It will take something smart to stop paper favourite Rodrigo Diaz, but an interesting opponent at a bigger price is WHITLOCK. Nicky Henderson has done well with this type of individual switching to the Flat, and he’s got excellent credentials to bring to the table from that code, when he was a dual scorer for John Gosden.
