ASCOT

Race 3 BETMGM MARES’ HURDLE (Grade 2)

No2 KARGESE (Nap)
Trainer: Willie Mullins – Jockey: Paul Townend

After winning two Grade1s and finishing second in two more, KARGESE embarks on a campaign that could take her to the Champion Hurdle. She needs to prove her fitness following a 260-day absence, but holds outstanding claims if anywhere as good as when we last saw her. Apart from TAKE NO CHANCES the remaining runners look outclassed.

Race 4 No10 BAD (Each Way)
Trainer: Ben Pauling – Jockey: Ben Jones

Although he doesn’t always find as much off the bridle as it seems he will, BAD can pack a punch at a track where he’s raced in six of his eleven races over hurdles and fences.

The grey hasn’t managed to win since being sourced out of the French provinces, but in receipt of plenty of weight in a race that’s has cut up favourably, he can again get into the money. KOTMASK and SCARFACE are closely matched on the book, and might also get involved.

Race 5 No11 STONER’S CHOICE (Each Way)
Trainer: Ben Case – Jockey: Max Kendrick

STONER’S CHOICE outperformed his lengthy odds when fourth in a competitive race over course and distance before Christmas when the last to come off the bridle. He had to spend 18 months in an enforced absence but has come back to show he’s retained much of his old ability.

He has a very good win to run strike-rate, and has it in him to land a valuable pot, if not today than later in the season. Another roughie worthy of consideration is MOVEIT LIKE MINNIE, who made the podium on his recent visit here and also looks overpriced.

Race 6 BETMGM CLARENCE HOUSE CHASE (Grade 1)

No3 ENERGUMENE
Trainer: Willie Mullins – Jockey: Paul Townend

Jonbon is carded to go off at odds-on for a race he’s never contested before. The winner of all but two of his 13 starts over fences was a showboating winner of the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown but meets a foe with similar credentials in ENERGUMENE, who was equally impressive on his first outing in 20 months in the Hilly Way Chase at Cork.

The 2023 Champion Chase winner could make life difficult for the favourite, and is a more attractive proposition at the respective prices.  EDWARDSTONE did all that could be expected of him when conceding lumps of weight in the Desert Orchid Chase but is more capable than BOOTHILL of making a fist of it with the ‘big two’.

TAUNTON

Race 1 No9 STONE’S THROW (Nap)
Trainer: Billy Aprahamian – Jockey: Sean Bowen

STONE’S THROW made an encouraging start to his hurdling career when third at Ludlow, only to then find less than expected when coming off the bridle at Uttoxeter. His prospects today are boosted by a needed step up the distance ladder, and the addition of title contender Bowen to his saddle.

Race 3 No11 GLENGOLLY (Each Way)
Trainer: Billy Aprahamian – Jockey: Richie McLernon

Having missed out when Plumpton was frosted off on Monday, GLENGOLLY finds himself in a more competitive heat but can definitely earn. The six-year-old appeared to be travelling with conviction when unseating his pilot at Wetherby, and while it happened too far out to say he would have won, it looked like he would definitely have been involved.

Race 6 No8 TRIBESMANS GLORY
Trainer: Chris Down – Jockey: Ben Ffrench Davis

TRIBESMANS GLORY won at Warwick in the spring before being narrowly beaten when returning at this course in late November. There hasn’t been a shred of support for him but he’s undeniably in the form of his life, and can again get into the shake-up.

HAYDOCK PARK

Race 2 No2 SPIRITS BAY (Nap)
Trainer: Nigel Twiston-Davies – Jockey: Jordan Nailor

SPIRITS BAY has missed out on a couple of good opportunities since his eye taking run at Cheltenham last month. On that occasion he made a jet propelled move to go past the majority of the field, only to weaken in the final 150 yards. This keen going individual probably has a lot more to give, and rates one of the better bets of the day.

Race 5 No3 IWILLDOIT
Trainer: Sam Thomas – Jockey: Dylan Johnston

Veteran IWILLDOIT ran a huge race on his seasonal comeback when third in the Welsh National where he looked the likely winner for much of the journey. While he can’t stand too much racing, and is dependent on plenty of cut on the ground, he’s not finding increasing years hampering his ability to earn, while his chance has been boosted by the doubtful participation of Mr Vango.

Race 6 No3 LOSSIEMOUTH (Each Way)
Trainer: Polly Gundry – Jockey: Charlie Deutsch

LOSSIEMOUTH took a huge walk in the market yet ran a race full of promise on debut for his trainer at Newbury. It was the ten-year-old’s first outing in almost three years, and if avoiding the bounce factor he’s a player in this long distance handicap hurdle.

WOLVERHAMPTON

Race 7 No1 CUT TO THE CHASE (Nap)
Trainer: Tony Carroll – Jockey: Luke Morris

CUT TO THE CHASE ran out a convincing scorer at Chelmsford last week to make it a second win from his last three starts. He’s competing at a level where further success is likely, in spite of a rise in the weights.

Race 8 No1 AUTUMN ANGEL
Trainer: Tony Carroll – Jockey: Molly Gunn

From the same stable AUTUMN ANGEL can also add to her laurels. She’s out to make this a third win from her last four outings, and has her tail up following a clear cut course and distance delivery.

Place Accumulator Perm (Races 3-9)

2, 1 x 3, 6, 8 x 1 x 3, 1 x 1, 6 x 1, 5 x 4
