GOODWOOD

Race 3 No8 MARSHAL DAN (Each Way)
Trainer: Heather Main – Jockey: Ray Dawson

MARSHAL DAN could never get his act together after going too hard from a bad draw at Newbury and paid the price. He’s far better judged on a big earning run at Newcastle on his previous start, and also on a near miss at this track when he chased home Montassib in May. He likes to get his toe into the ground.

Race 5 No7 RATHGAR (Nap)
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: Charles Bishop

RATHGAR seemed to hot a flat spot in the early stages of his latest start at this course, which arguably cost him the race. The Ulysses colt made up the lost ground stylishly, but ultimately was unable to reel in Galactic Jack. He’s very much the form horse going into this, and barring accidents should have little trouble in breaking his maiden.

Race 6 No4 AJERO
Trainer: Kim Bailey – Jockey: David Egan

AJERO graduated from maidens to handicaps with a stylish success in the final race of Glorious Goodwood. He put in a rare disappointing run at Sandown but has been given plenty of time to regroup from that lapse. He’s in a tightly knit contest here, but can take away another cheque against hardy rivals like Tritonic and Goshen.

FFOS LAS

Race 4 No2 MILKWOOD
Trainer: Neil Mulholland – Jockey: Sam Twiston-Davies

Given a level playing field with the ground, MILKWOOD holds strong claims in this featured Welsh Champion Hurdle. Last year’s Scottish Champion Hurdle winner has been selectively campaigned since then with no further success, but his efforts included a fine second to Saldier in the Galway Hurdle, making him a horse not to be underestimated.

Race 6 No3 OBEY THE RULES
Trainer: Donald McCain Jnr – Jockey: Theo Gillard

Considering he made a number of jumping errors, OBEY THE RULES did well to finish second at Bangor and fill that placing for the second time in succession. As long as he smartens up his act in that department, he can make this a fourth career triumph.

Race 7 No5 ROCK ON HARRY (Nap)
Trainer: Tom Lacey – Jockey: Stan Sheppard

ROCK ON HARRY opened his point-to-point account on a third start in that field before joining the Lacey stable. He’s worked and schooled well ahead of this first outing under Rules, and can outpoint Not Long Left who might prefer better ground.

SOUTHWELL

Race 1 No4 THAAYER (Each Way)
Trainer: Michael Herrington – Jockey: Tom Eaves

THAAYER is well drawn to obtain a good stalking position in this handicap round almost a circuit of the racecourse. He’s been knocking at the door, and deserves to put one on the board on a surface he appears to savour.

Race 2 No3 CHEALMY (Nap)
Trainer: James Ferguson – Jockey: Daniel Muscutt

CHEALMY was ridden with confidence before her creditable fourth in what looked a warm heat at Newmarket two weeks ago. It’s interesting that she remains in maiden company rather than pursuing a nursery, and is strongly fancied to open her account from a perfect draw.

Race 7 No3 PROPHESISE
Trainer: Tim Easterby – Jockey: David Sllan

PROPHESISE is a long-standing maiden but made a good fist of it on his first visit here when third to Haven Lady at the start of the month. He’s entitled to progress from that, and can topple recent Wolverhampton scorer Another Odyssey.
