Neil Morrice: UK and Irish Racing Tips – Friday 3 May 2019

Jockey rides horse

Neil Morrice brings us all of his best bets and tips for Friday’s racing at Lingfield, Chepstow, Musselburgh, Cheltenham and Punchestown.

Lingfield Best Bet

Race 4: MAKSAB (3)
Trainer: Mick Channon
Jockey: Silvestre de Sousa

Conditions look like being perfect for MAKSAB on his first run on grass this year.
The Makfi colt won on Polytrack here on his reappearance but is better on turf and when being able to dominate. De Sousa, who has ridden the selection on seven occasions, will endeavour to grab the lead and make the best of his way home.

Chepstow Best Bets

Race 2: MAIDEN CASTLE (10)
Trainer: Henry Candy
Jockey: Hayley Turner

Started 80-1 for his debut on the Kempton Polytrack and wasn’t disgraced in finishing strongly to get into the money, albeit beaten more than nine lengths by the winner Khuzaam. He has work to do against two or three of these but can only improve over the longer trip.

Race 3: EARL OF HARROW (4)
Trainer: Mick Channon
Jockey: George Downing

Named after the late leader of the Monster Raving Looney Party, David Sutch, EARL OF HARROW earned a handicap mark when finishing in mid-division on his final 2018 start at Redcar. He has shown sufficiently in his preparation for this to suggest he could raise his game now entering a different part of the racing spectrum.

Musselburgh Best Bet

Race 7: DEW POND (4)
Trainer: Tim Easterby
Jockey: Rachel Richardson

Although yet to win at this course the versatile DEW POND has plenty going for him in a weak heat. He’s run well over hurdles through the winter and is better than a lacklustre effort at Southwell the other day indicates. He gets on well with his jockey, and is an attractive Each Way proposition.

Cheltenham Best Bets

Race 4: HAZEL HILL (1)
Trainer: Philip Rowley
Jockey: Mr Alex Edwards

A well supported winner of the Foxhunters Chase over this course and distance at the Festival in March, HAZEL HILL is the new kid on the block in the hunter-Chase arena and has the wherewithal to trump multiple scorer Virak. The Nap is unbeaten in four starts over regulation fences, gallops and stays all day and has seen the Foxhunters third Top Wood reappear to win the Aintree Foxhunters.

Race 7: RISK A FINE (1)
Trainer: Gareth Moore
Jockey: Mr James King

A success for RISK A FINE here probably rests on whether course specialist Village Vic can stage a revival. The latter appeared to get tired on his first hunter-Chase at Newbury and has been rested, but contrasting with that Risk A Fine’s been making hay on the circuit and has his tail well and truly up.

Punchestown Best Bet

Race 4: BUVEUR D’AIR (1)
Trainer: Nicky Henderson
Jockey: Mark Walsh

It’s a bold statement but there’s an argument that BUVEUR D’AIR is unlucky not to have gone through the season unbeaten and he can roar back under new jockey Walsh. He was pipped by Verdana Blue in a tactical race at Kempton, fell in the early stages of the Champion Hurdle, and would have beaten Supasundae at Aintree but for getting hampered when Melon fell three out. Taking all that into account he deserves to end the current campaign with a win in this Grade 1 feature, and I think he can.
