Neil Morrice: UK Racing Tips – Friday 10 May 2019

Jockey rides horse

Neil Morrice brings us all of his best bets and tips from Friday’s racing at Chester, Ascot, Nottingham and Ripon.

Chester Best Bets

Race 3: FRANKUUS (3)
Trainer: David O’Meara
Jockey: Danny Tudhope

A change of scenery hasn’t done FRANKUUS any harm judging from the way he travelled kindly in front on his debut for O’Meara at Ripon. And even though he was ultimately reeled in by King’s Advice, the evidence is there for all to see that he’s had his spirit rekindled. Furthermore, these sharp turns will play to his strengths if he can get onto an easy lead.

Race 4: AUSTRIAN SCHOOL (3)
Trainer: Mark Johnston
Jockey: Joe Fanning

The undoubted highlight of this Festival can go to AUSTRIAN SCHOOL, whose comeback success at Musselburgh rocketed him to the forefront of the ante-post market. Forever the bridegroom in the second half of the 2018 campaign, the 4yo looks to have improved markedly based on the way he powered clear on his Scottish return.

Race 5: KACHY (1)
Trainer: Tom Dascombe
Jockey: Richard Kingscote

The blistering speed shown by KACHY on his last three winning starts will be needed in bundles for him to overcome the effects of the widest draw. But such is his acceleration from the blocks that he can quickly get across to the rail and dominate to earn himself a shot at the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Ascot Best Bets

Race 4: DIAMOND DOUGAL (4)
Trainer: Mick Channon
Jockey: Scott McCullough

From stall four DIAMOND DOUGAL should get the rub of the green in this ultra-competitive sprint where an inside draw is of paramount importance. He landed connections some good bets at Windsor before running a stormer at Ripon. Both efforts suggest he’s a better horse this year and he’s far more effective on the easy conditions he gets here.

Race 7: BILLY RAY (1)
Trainer: Mick Channon
Jockey: Scott McCullough

From an official mark of 91 BILLY RAY can operate effectively in long distance handicaps this year but such is his requirement for cut in the ground that connections will need to adopt a very patient approach. He found the going way too quick when underperforming at the Royal meeting here last year, a run that set him back, but everything has gone to plan in his preparation so far this season.

Nottingham Best Bet

Race 4: PATCHOULI (2)
Trainer: Mick Channon
Jockey: David Egan

After finding a mile and a half a trip beyond her best when unplaced on her seasonal reappearance, PATCHOULI shaped in eye-catching fashion to finish third behind Cuban Sun over this mile and a quarter last month. Compromised by a wide draw, she was shuffled back to last on the home bend but stayed on strongly at the finish to be beaten four lengths. Once again the draw hasn’t been kind, but she can overcome it.

Ripon Best Bet

Race 6: SO NEAR SO FARHH (7)
Trainer: Mick Channon
Jockey: Callum Shepherd

While this doesn’t look straightforward, SO NEAR SO FARHH can gain a first success of the season. A slow burner last year who found her niche towards the back end, the 4yo wasn’t suited by a sedate gallop on her Pontefract return and although going clear in the straight was nabbed in the last couple of strides.
