He has produced some quality performances behind classy individuals and now has his peak outing. The imported gelding will prefer racing back on the grass and he should go close from a good draw. He is the only ride for jockey Jacobson on this card.
Race 2: CATHERINEOFARAGO(1)
Jockey: A MARCUS – Trainer: A GORDON
This is a moderate maiden contest and the recently improved CATHERINEOFARAGON won’t get an easier chance to shed her maiden certificate. Anton Marcus’ ride showed vast improvement when she stayed on for 3rd in a competitive field over this distance on the polytrack, three weeks ago. She should transfer that form to the turf today, particularly from the best draw and is certainly the one to beat
Race 3: SHE’S A FORTRESS(2)
Jockey: L HEWITSON – Trainer: C BESTEL
The speedy SHE’S A FORTRESS took on too much in a minor feature over this c & d last time but she will prefer this class of opposition. She showed her capabilities with an effortless victory at a similar level in her penultimate start and will again benefit from a 2.5kgs apprentice claim today. The Fort Wood filly should quickly bounce back to form at this level.
Race 4: CAPTAIN’S CAUSEWAY(11)
Jockey: S KHUMALO – Trainer: S TARRY
The Gauteng visitor CAPTAIN’S CAUSEWAY is making up for lost time as he produced two impressive comeback victories on the Highveld after returning from a long absence. He picked up the maximum eight-pound penalty for that recent thrashing of the consistent Thrust (placed 3rd subsequently) but still has huge scope for progress and will be cherry-ripe today. The son of Captain Al should handle this rise in grade and he is worth following during the winter season.

CUVEE BRUT is a classy four-year-old filly who progressed smartly during the Cape summer and she was impressive when winning a graded feature over seven furlongs in late February. Moreover, she is versatile and has struck up a great partnership with Marcus who partners her today. The daughter of Count Dubois won her only start on this track last winter and she has plenty more improvement to come. She faces a strong field on her winter season debut but this testing circuit and the six furlongs should suit her perfectly.
