Winning Form Best Bets
Race 1: SPIAGGIA(11)
Race 2: BRAAMBILLY(1)
Race 3: RAMP DIVA(1)
Race 8: BADGER FRIENDLY(1)
Race 1: SPIAGGIA(11) – TOP BET
Jockey: Kevin SHEA – Trainer: Alec LAIRD
SPIAGGIA looks a smart type and she built on her promising debut when she challenged strongly and was runner-up over this trip at Clairwood on her local debut, eight weeks ago. She was returning from a 14 week break and may have just needed the outing. That was a particularly strong field and this daughter of Elusive Quality will strip much fitter today and has strong claims of going one better. She does make her course debut but is favourably drawn at barrier 4 and should have the measure of this field.
Race 3: RAMP DIVA(1)
Jockey: Sean CORMACK – Trainer: Mark DIXON
RAMP DIVA had excuses for her below-par last effort. She has finally cracked a good draw and that is all the daughter of Right Approach needs to exit the maiden ranks today. She had shown lots of promise prior to that last start and at least now has the experience of having raced around a left hand turn. She went close in both her prior efforts over this c & d and merits very healthy respect. Having said that, she is likely to be a very short-priced favourite here and caution must be exercised. The runner that could offer significant improvement today is the half-sister to former champion,
Race 4: TERRACOTTA SOLDI(6)
Jockey: MJ ODENDAAL – Trainer: Colin SCOTT
This is another competitive staying contest but again there could be some decent value to be had, especially about TERRACOTA SOLDIER, who is having just his fourth career outing. The son of Dynasty overcame a tardy start and showed big improvement after setting the pace over 1950m on this course, two weeks ago. He tired after his early theatrics that day and was beaten just under five lengths. He has a bit to find with a few of today’s rivals on that outing but one can’t help but feel that there is much scope for improvement. The gelding will be cherry-ripe on his third run after the break and should enjoy this rise in trip. He jumps from a midfield draw and will be a strong contender.
Race 5: DOLOMITI(1)
DOLOMITI appears a nice prospect and she landed the gamble in impressive fashion on her debut over six furlongs at Clairwood, three weeks ago. The daughter of Caesour quickened smartly and demolished some fair sorts. The fourth placed runner trotted up by more than six lengths at her very next start which gives the form a major boost. She takes on much stronger from a wide draw on her debut around the turn but will love the extra furlong and really does look like a top prospect in the making.
VALUE BET FOR TODAY:
Race 2: FLYING FELLOW(2) (Each Way)
Jockey: Collen Storey – Trainer: Wayne BADENHORST
This is another intriguing contest and though the market may suggest otherwise, FLYING FELLOW could represent the value here. The son of Ravishing overcame a slow start and a wide draw when outrun late into second over 1450m at Clairwood, recently. That was his career best effort and he will again enjoy a 4kgs apprentice claim. He is very well drawn at 3 today. He weakened late after racing handy and was beaten 7.25 lengths behind Whistle Stop in his penultimate outing over seven furlongs. Interestingly, today’s likely short-priced favourite, JAY BOY was runner-up in that same contest and finished four lengths ahead of the top rating. However, the top rating crucially gets a 4kgs apprentice claim this time around and he showed very good improvement in his subsequent start. The latter has shown plenty of promise to date and his pedigree suggests that he will be at his best over further. The third placed runner franked the form when dead-heating for first next time out and this son of Jay Peg will enjoy the step-up to the mile.
