The Queen’s Plate formline is strongly represented in this prestigious event and of course that contest produced a spectacular finish.
Of course the winner’s time indicated that the race was run at a false tempo which clearly didn’t suit last season’s Winter Series victory, AFRICAN NIGHT SKY, who deserves another chance on his peak showing. The Dynasty gelding will much prefer this ten furlongs and he can upset his fancied rivals.
The ageing soldiers LEGAL EAGLE and CAPTAIN AMERICA fought a titanic duel before almost being upstaged in the Queen’s Plate earlier this month but the efforts of a few of their rivals probably flatters them. This pair should again be contenders for top honours, having finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in this contest 12 months ago.
LAST WINTER has improved swiftly with each outing and the sparingly raced four-year old announced himself with a cracking last effort in a nine furlong feature. He had the 4th placed entrant of last season’s July, KRAMBAMBULI comfortably behind him that day and the Kannemeyer inmate will be cherry-ripe. The bay colt should love the extra furlong but his brilliant jockey does have the widest barrier position to overcome.
