Magic Tips Best Bets

Jockey: Anthony DELPECH – Trainer: Joe SOMA

A very competitive opening contest on tonight’s card, made that much more interesting as most of the form runners have drawn badly but have top jockeys aboard. Anthony Delpech climbs aboard the Windrush gelding RUSHMORE RIVER who has finished runner-up in his last three starts. He was forced to ease late when he was outrun into second over this trip on his Highveld debut on the inside course, four weeks ago. However, he will be an entirely different proposition on this standside course. He is highly regarded and has shown some useful form behind quality sorts. He should go extremely despite his wide draw.

Race 2:  WIN A MILLION(16)
Jockey: Grant V/NIEKERK – Trainer: Kumaran NAIDOO

WIN A MILLION didn’t recover from his slow start on the sand last time but has been given another short break by his conditioner. His cracking debut in a feature shows the class of the son of Count Dubois and he would have strengthened further during his latest absence. He reverts to the turf and it is very encouraging that Grant van Niekerk has made the trip up from Cape Town.

Jockey: Anthony DELPECH – Trainer: Mike DE KOCK

BERLINETTA appears a smart sort in the making and for now she has sprinted really well in her two flawless victories at Clairwood over five and six furlongs, respectively. In between those runs she faded badly when contesting a Grade 1 from a poor draw over seven furlongs at Greyville. She makes her Highveld debut tonight and though she won’t be fully wound up, she has tons of scope for improvement and is definitely the one to beat.

Jockey: Robbie FRADD – Trainer: Geoff WOODRUFF

DO YOU REMEMBER and ESPUMANTI are both top class sorts who are making their seasonal debuts after a few months break but their respective conditioners have found ideal races for the pair and they are expected to dominate proceedings. The former gets the slight nod and she had a brilliant three-year old campaign that culminated in her winning a Grade 1 over ten furlongs at Greyville. However, she produced arguably the run of her career when she finished a close third, beaten under half a length in the July over 2200m last time out. She is clearly better over further but has a swift turn of foot and races fresh, so she will still have a huge say over this trip.

Race 8: SOLEIL ROYAL(3) (Each Way)
Jockey: Piere STRYDOM – Trainer: Grant MAROUN

This is another competitive contest but SOLEIL ROYAL reverts to the standside track and that could be the key. Strydom has done well aboard the gelding but he is a bit of a galloper and may not have enjoyed himself on the inside course in his last two starts. Also, that was against slightly stronger opposition. He only failed by a head to win his last c & d start, three runs back and could make amends from a good draw tonight. However, there are a few that won’t let him off lightly.
